What you will learn

Open the Shopify App Store's affiliate category and every listing shows a free plan. The obvious plan is: start free, upgrade when it works.
Then you try to line the pricing up and discover the comparison doesn't hold. One app is flat monthly. Another is monthly plus 2% of referral revenue. Shopify's own Collabs is free to install with a 2.9% processing fee on commission payouts. Two of those are percentages — but one is a percentage of sales, and the other is a percentage of what you pay the creator. At a 10% commission rate, those denominators differ by 10x.
Below: what Shopify's native discounts can and can't do, then Shopify Collabs, UpPromote Affiliate Marketing, BixGrow Affiliate Marketing, Affilitrak Affiliate, and GOAFFPRO compared on identical axes. Research date: September 1, 2026.
The short version
You can genuinely run this at zero cost. Affilitrak lists its full feature set as free. BixGrow's STARTER and GOAFFPRO's free plan both have workable limits. Nothing here requires starting with a paid tier.
UpPromote's free plan caps on dollars, not people. The limit is "$3,000 monthly referral sales approval" — high-AOV stores hit that fast, with only a handful of affiliates.
Percentage models get worse as you succeed. UpPromote Growth is $29.99/mo plus 2% of referral revenue. At $10,000/mo referred, that's $229.99. BixGrow SCALE is $19.99 at any volume.
Collabs' 2.9% is on commission, not revenue. The Help Center's own example: $100 sale, 10% commission, processing fee is 29 cents. Reading "Collabs 2.9% vs UpPromote 2%" as a like-for-like comparison inverts the actual answer.
The first-party app has the lowest rating of the five. Shopify Collabs sits at 4.1 with 84 one-star reviews — 21% of its 397 total. UpPromote and BixGrow are both at 4.9.
What native Shopify actually gives you
An affiliate program needs three things: a way to attribute a sale to a referrer, a way to calculate what they earned, and a way to pay them.
Native Shopify covers part of the first one. Issue a discount code per referrer and you can see usage counts. Add UTM parameters and you get traffic attribution.
It does not give you:
- a portal where affiliates self-register and check their own balance
- commission rates and automatic per-order calculation
- automatic clawback when an order is refunded or canceled
- payout processing
- tiered commissions or bonuses
So the native workflow is: export discount code usage, calculate commissions in a spreadsheet, manually subtract refunded orders, and send individual payments. That works at five affiliates. It stops working somewhere past twenty.
Install an app when one of these becomes true: more than roughly ten affiliates, affiliates who need to see their own numbers, or refund reconciliation that you no longer want to do by hand. If you're working with one or two influencers under individual contracts, discount codes and a spreadsheet are the correct answer.

Three readings.
Four incompatible pricing philosophies. Collabs taxes the payout. UpPromote taxes the revenue. BixGrow and GOAFFPRO charge a flat fee regardless of scale. Affilitrak charges nothing. The question isn't which is cheaper today — it's where cost lands when the program works.
The first-party app is rated lowest. Collabs at 4.1 has 84 one-star, 31 two-star, and 36 three-star reviews — 38% at three stars or below. In this category, "it's from Shopify" is not a quality signal.
Localization is uniformly partial. UpPromote, BixGrow, and Affilitrak all list additional interface languages. But all five listings carry a note that the developer does not provide direct support in those languages. Localized UI, English-only support.
Modeling it at $10,000/month
Assume $10,000/mo in referred revenue at a 10% commission rate, so $1,000/mo paid to affiliates.
| App | Calculation | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Shopify Collabs | 2.9% of $1,000 commission | ~$29 |
| UpPromote (Growth) | $29.99 + 2% of $10,000 | ~$229.99 |
| UpPromote (Professional) | $89.99 + 1.5% of $10,000 | ~$239.99 |
| BixGrow (SCALE) | $19.99 flat | $19.99 |
| Affilitrak | Free | $0 |
| GOAFFPRO (Premium) | $49 flat | $49 |
Two things to notice.
Percentage-of-revenue models scale badly. That's not a criticism — it's the design. UpPromote's three rate tiers (2%, 1.5%, 1%) exist precisely to manage the crossover points; Professional costs $60/mo more than Growth but overtakes it somewhere past roughly $12,000/mo in referred revenue.
And flat models are overpriced when you're small. At $1,000/mo referred, UpPromote Growth is about $50 and BixGrow SCALE is $19.99 — the gap narrows considerably.
Rate isn't the only variable, though. UpPromote gates unlimited programs, customer referral programs, store credit, leak-proof discounts, PayPal auto-payouts, and tiered commissions across its plans. Check the feature side before optimizing on rate.
App detail
Shopify Collabs
Best for: creator partnerships you want to run inside the Shopify admin and billing, especially if gifting is part of the program. Gift sending and tracking built into Shopify is the genuine differentiator here.
Availability. All plans except Starter and Retail, per the Help Center. If you're eligible for Shopify Flow, you can automate Collabs steps through it.
The payment mechanism is unusual and matters. Commissions post to your Shopify bill as a line item called Shopify Collabs Commission. Creators get paid after you pay your Shopify bill. And each creator must activate auto-payouts on their end — otherwise commission that clears the holding period moves to a "waiting for creator" state that you cannot resolve from your side.
Default holding period is 30 days, configurable from 1 to 90. Commission on orders canceled or fully refunded during holding is automatically canceled.
Fees and currency. A 2.9% processing fee applies to every automatic commission payment. The Help Center's example: $100 affiliate sale at 10% commission means a 2.9% fee of 29 cents — the denominator is the commission, not the sale.
Automatic payments are handled in USD and charged in your Shopify bill's currency. If your bill is in another currency, local currency conversion fees may apply. Creators cashing out in a non-USD currency pay a payout conversion fee themselves.
Constraints. Manual payments stopped tracking new commissions on January 8, 2024 — automatic payments are the only path. Shopify may automatically open a dispute against a creator for Community Guidelines violations including discount code leaks, paid ads activity, or suspicious social accounts. If you don't resolve it within 30 days, Collabs pauses the connection and cancels commission, gifts, links, and codes.
W9 collection is available only to US-based merchants; creators who don't submit one are capped at $599.99 USD/year in payouts.
Pricing (Sept 1, 2026). Free to install, with a 2.9% commission processing fee that may apply to automatic payments.
UpPromote Affiliate Marketing
Best for: treating affiliate as a real acquisition channel with a program manager behind it. Deepest feature set and by far the largest review base of the five.
What it does. Multiple concurrent programs, flexible commission/bonus/gift rewards, audience reports and credibility scoring for creator vetting, leak-proof discount links, fraud detection, blocklists, and automated tracking, approval, discounts, and PayPal payouts.
Notable. 3,669 reviews at 4.9, with 3,514 at five stars. Built for Shopify badge. Integrations include Facebook pixel, Hydrogen (headless), Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Omnisend, PageFly, EComposer, PayPal, Recharge, and Appstle Subscriptions.
Caveats. The free tier caps at $3,000/mo in referral sales — a dollar limit, not a headcount limit. Every paid tier adds 1–2% of referral revenue on top of the monthly fee. Creator Discovery is a separate add-on starting at $39/mo, not bundled into any plan.
Pricing (Sept 1, 2026). Free: up to $3,000/mo referral sales. Growth: $29.99/mo (or $299.90/yr, 17% off) + 2%, 300 referrals/mo. Professional: $89.99/mo (or $899.90/yr) + 1.5%, 600 referrals/mo. Enterprise: $199.99/mo (or $1,999.90/yr) + 1%, unlimited referral approvals. 14-day trial on paid plans. USD.
BixGrow Affiliate Marketing
Best for: programs you expect to grow, where you want the cost line to stay predictable. No revenue-linked charge at any tier.
What it does. Three tracking methods — affiliate links, affiliate coupons, and linked emails — plus a referral program to convert existing customers into advocates, multi-level marketing, and payouts via store credit or PayPal. Accessible directly from the Shopify toolbar.
Notable. 1,248 reviews at 4.9 with only 6 one-star reviews, the cleanest low-end distribution of the five. Built for Shopify badge. Every plan is flat monthly.
Caveats. STARTER is capped at 1 program, 50 referral orders/month, and 30 affiliates. PayPal auto-payouts and API access are ADVANCED-only ($49.99/mo). MLM and leak-proof coupons require PRO or above.
Pricing (Sept 1, 2026). STARTER: free. SCALE: $19.99/mo (or $215.88/yr, 10% off) — unlimited affiliates, programs, and orders. PRO: $29.99/mo (or $323.88/yr). ADVANCED: $49.99/mo (or $509.88/yr, 15% off). 14-day trial on paid plans. USD.
Affilitrak Affiliate
Best for: validating whether affiliate works for your catalog at all, before committing budget.
What it does. Automated affiliate onboarding, link and coupon tracking, PayPal auto-payouts or manual recording, and custom multi-level marketing configuration. The feature list includes branded portals, custom domains, custom forms, tiered benefits, bulk payouts, and scheduled payouts.
Notable. Listed pricing is "Free" with no paid tier shown. 246 reviews at 5.0 with a single one-star. Built for Shopify badge.
Caveats. Listed January 23, 2025 — the newest of the five by four years, so there's less operating history behind that rating. 246 reviews is a small base next to UpPromote's 3,669. Integrations listed are limited to checkout, Shopify admin, and PayPal, noticeably fewer than UpPromote or BixGrow.
Pricing (Sept 1, 2026). Free. Pricing structures change — confirm on the listing before committing.
GOAFFPRO ‑ Affiliate Marketing
Best for: unlimited affiliate headcount at no cost, if you can manage coupon-leak risk yourself.
What it does. Unlimited affiliates, revenue, and traffic; a branded portal where affiliates get links and stats; automated referral tracking and order attribution; Android and iPhone apps for affiliates with push notifications; customizable reward and multi-level plans. Integrations include Shopify POS.
Caveats. English only. 36 one-star and 10 two-star reviews. A July 25, 2026 review from a US merchant alleges affiliates hijacking existing discount codes and UTM parameters to claim attribution on sales from customers already on the store's email and SMS lists; the developer responded publicly disputing the account. A June 29, 2026 review raises coupon aggregator sites scraping codes. If you install this, configure leak protection first.
Pricing (Sept 1, 2026). Free plan: unlimited affiliates, unlimited revenue, branded portal, analytics, post-checkout popup, mobile app. Premium: $49/mo adding MLM, custom-domain portal, bulk email, advanced analytics, and 30+ customization options. 15-day trial. USD.
Choosing by situation
Testing the concept at zero cost. Affilitrak. Full features free, Built for Shopify. Because it's newer, run one test affiliate end-to-end through tracking and payout before going live.
Unlimited affiliate headcount for free. GOAFFPRO is the only free tier without a people cap. English-only, and configure coupon leak protection before recruiting.
Growth expected, cost must stay predictable. BixGrow. Flat pricing, $49.99 ceiling. Above roughly $10,000/mo referred revenue, the gap versus percentage models is decisive.
Deepest feature set and largest track record. UpPromote. 3,669 reviews at 4.9 is the biggest evidence base here. Model the percentage at your target volume first.
Gifting is part of the program. Shopify Collabs — the only one of the five with gift sending and tracking built into Shopify. Go in understanding the 4.1 rating, the 84 one-star reviews, and that commission routes through your Shopify bill in USD.
Pre-install checklist
- Under ~10 affiliates? Verify native discount codes plus a spreadsheet genuinely isn't enough
- Write down each app's charging denominator: referral revenue, commission amount, or neither
- Model monthly cost at your target referral volume and commission rate, not today's
- Check whether each free tier caps on dollars, order count, or headcount
- Verify the features you need (PayPal auto-payout, tiered commission, leak-proof coupons, API) are in the tier you're pricing
- On Collabs: check your Shopify bill currency and the USD conversion exposure
- On Collabs: tell creators up front they must activate auto-payouts on their side
- Confirm how refunds and cancellations claw back commission
- Confirm what leak protection exists against coupon aggregators and paid-ad affiliates
- If you need support in a language other than English, plan around the fact that none of the five provide it
The takeaway
In this category, pricing model matters more than feature checklists. Four incompatible models — flat, revenue percentage, free, and commission processing fee — sit side by side, and a comparison table alone won't tell you which is cheapest for you.
Four steps:
- Under ten affiliates, confirm native discount codes aren't sufficient before installing anything
- Pick a target referral volume and commission rate, then compute each app's monthly cost at those numbers
- Check whether each free tier's limit is dollars, orders, or people — they are not equivalent
- Use the trial to run tracking, approval, refund reconciliation, and payout end-to-end once
Affiliate programs are easy to start and hard to sustain. Understand what happens to cost and workload when the program actually works, then choose.
Pricing and features change. Verify against each app's Shopify App Store listing and the current Shopify Help Center pages before you commit.
Shop Pay Installments is free to activate, needs no app, and Shopify never publishes what it costs you — the rate is visible only inside your own admin. It also refuses Capital One and Chase credit cards, restricts monthly plans to debit cards only, excludes gift cards and subscriptions, and can't be turned off for individual products. Affirm can suspend your account for being password-protected, for having a non-English storefront, or for being primarily B2B. And Shopify's Getting paid page says disputes appear in your admin while its FAQ says they don't. If you fail the eligibility gates, the alternative is on-site messaging apps from Klarna, Afterpay, Sezzle, Zip, and PayPal — a category rated between 1.0 and 3.2 stars. Researched September 2, 2026.
