Shopify Audiences Has Three Eligibility Gates — and One of Them Is Geographic

Shopify Audiences exports high-intent customer lists to Meta, Google, Criteo, Pinterest, Snapchat, and TikTok at no extra cost. The catch is three requirements: Shopify Plus, Shopify Payments, and being based in and selling to the United States or Canada. Fail any one and the app stops refreshing — your already-exported lists get renamed with a '[Not maintained since]' prefix inside your ad account. Here's exactly what the four audience types are, which of them you can rebuild with free tools, and the one that is structurally impossible to replicate. Researched September 1, 2026.

What you will learn

Shopify Audiences is one of the more interesting things bundled with Plus. It exports lists of likely buyers straight into your Meta, Google, Criteo, Pinterest, Snapchat, or TikTok ad accounts, at no cost beyond your Plus subscription. And because the lists are built from data contributed across participating Shopify merchants, they contain people your own customer file could never surface.

That's the pitch. The fine print is three eligibility gates, and merchants regularly discover the third one only after upgrading.

You must be on Shopify Plus. You must use Shopify Payments. And you must be based in and selling to the United States or Canada. That last requirement is geographic, not a settings toggle. A UK, EU, or APAC merchant on Plus with Shopify Payments still doesn't qualify.

This post covers what the app actually generates, what happens when a store falls out of eligibility, and — for stores that can't use it — which parts are rebuildable with free tools and which part isn't. Research date: September 1, 2026.

The short version

Three requirements, all mandatory. The help center's FAQ lists them as bullet points: your store must be on the Shopify Plus plan, must use Shopify Payments, and must operate in and sell to the United States or Canada. Separately, Shopify Network Intelligence must be enabled in your privacy settings before you can install the app.

The "existing customers" half of Shopify Audiences is rebuildable for free, on any plan. Build a customer segment in the Shopify admin, export it to CSV, upload it to Meta Custom Audiences or Google Customer Match. That gives you suppression, remarketing, and a lookalike seed. No app required, no cost.

The prospecting half is not rebuildable. Shopify Audiences' Prospecting list is drawn from purchase data contributed by other participating Shopify merchants. Nothing in the App Store replicates that, because no third-party app has that vantage point.

So if you're ineligible, the productive framing isn't "find a Shopify Audiences alternative." It's "make sure you're extracting everything your own first-party data can give the ad platforms." The apps for that are free, from Meta and Google directly.

What Shopify Audiences generates

Six ad platforms

You can connect Meta, Google, Criteo, Pinterest, Snapchat, and TikTok. Audiences are usually usable within 24 hours of setting up the app and connecting a platform.

For Google, exported audiences work across Google Search, Google Shopping, Gmail, YouTube, and the Google Display Network.

Four audience types

Meta gets the fullest set:

Retargeting Boost — people who engaged with your brand but haven't purchased. You add it to existing retargeting ad sets. Meta refreshes it with additional potential customers every 1–7 days.

Prospecting — people similar to those who bought your products or complementary products. Refreshed every 7–14 days.

Meta Lookalike — a lookalike built from Retargeting Boost as the source. It includes 3% of Meta users in the US and Canada, with an estimated size of 9.1 million. Managed and refreshed by Meta, not Shopify.

Existing Customers Plus — your existing customers in the US and Canada. Three documented uses: exclude them from prospecting campaigns, include them in remarketing, or feed them as a signal to Advantage+ campaigns.

Other platforms vary. Criteo's lookalike segment includes 100,000 customers in the US and Canada. Pinterest generates an Actalike audience covering 10% of US Pinterest users. TikTok gets only two types — Lookalike and Existing Customers.

You can't see inside the lists

The FAQ is explicit: for privacy reasons you can't find out the identity or contact information of customers in an audience, and you can't add or exclude individual customers from a specific audience. The only exclusion available is a global one — exclude customers from all audiences, set in the app's settings page.

You also can't find out which other merchants use Shopify Audiences, and you can't exclude competitors from benefiting from your contributed data. If you're using Enhanced Services, the data you contribute is used to benefit other participating merchants.

What happens if you fall out of eligibility

This is the part worth knowing before you build campaigns on it.

The app stays in your admin until you uninstall it, but it stops refreshing. Audiences already sitting in your ad account get renamed — from Shopify Audience - Audience Type (Shop Name) to [Not maintained since -date-] Shopify Audience - Audience Type (Shop Name).

So a stale list doesn't disappear or throw an error. It just quietly stops updating, with the warning encoded in the audience name. If you run multiple stores across entities and one drops off Plus or switches payment providers, that prefix is the signal.

Shopify has a pattern of region-gating first-party features. We've covered Shopify Protect being limited to US-based stores, Shop Campaigns' 24-country list, and Shopify Collabs' Discover being US/UK/Canada only. Audiences belongs in that family.

What you can rebuild without it

Mapping the four audience types onto what an ineligible store can produce:

Existing Customers — fully rebuildable, no cost

Customer segments are available on every Shopify plan. You build them with ShopifyQL by combining filter names, operators, and values, either in the editor on the Customers page or from the Segments page. The admin ships default segments and templates you can modify as a starting point.

Segments export to CSV. From the admin, go to Customers, click Segments, open the segment, click More actions, then Export. You can pick a CSV formatted for Excel/Numbers or a plain CSV.

Upload that file to Meta Custom Audiences (customer list) or Google Customer Match and you have the equivalent of Existing Customers Plus: suppression from prospecting, remarketing inclusion, and a lookalike seed.

Zero incremental cost. The only difference from Shopify Audiences is that it's a manual refresh.

Retargeting Boost — partially rebuildable

Shopify Audiences' Retargeting Boost pulls brand-engaged non-purchasers from across the Shopify network. That part you can't reproduce.

What you can reproduce is the subset who visited your site — standard pixel and Conversions API retargeting, which predates Shopify Audiences entirely.

Meta's official Facebook & Instagram app is free to install, rated 3.8 across 5,362 reviews, with a Japanese UI available. Its listed features include custom audiences, lookalike audiences, retargeting, and pixel management. Google's official Google & YouTube app is also free to install, rated 4.5 across 5,140 reviews, and lists custom audiences, lookalike audiences, and retargeting. In both cases ad spend bills directly to your ad account; the app itself has no monthly fee.

Lookalike — fully rebuildable

Both Meta and Google build lookalikes from an uploaded customer list. And Shopify Audiences' Meta Lookalike is itself just a Meta-generated lookalike — the help center says outright that it's "managed and refreshed by Meta."

So if you can supply the seed list, you get the same object. The only variable is seed quality.

Prospecting — not rebuildable

Shopify Audiences' Prospecting audience finds people similar to those who bought your products or complementary products, drawn from participating merchants' data. The help center describes the mechanism as leveraging data and attributes shared by participating Shopify merchants, with the algorithm identifying millions of customer behavior patterns to match purchase intent against your store's attributes.

Your own data can't produce this, and neither can any App Store listing. It requires platform-level visibility. Worth being straightforward about rather than pretending an app substitutes.

What the table shows

Three of the five cost nothing to start. Shopify customer segments, Meta's official app, and Google's official app all carry no monthly fee. Ad spend bills to the ad account, separately from any app charge.

Klaviyo trades UI language for automation. Its App Store listing states the app isn't translated into Japanese. But its integration list includes Meta Advertising and TikTok Advertising, which means segment sync to ad platforms without the manual CSV round trip. The free tier covers 250 contacts; the email plan for 251–500 contacts is $20/month.

Meta's official app is rated 3.8, and that's not a reason to skip it. The rating spans 5,362 reviews and reflects long-running complaints about catalog sync and integration reliability. But for Meta ad connectivity there isn't a meaningful alternative to the first-party channel app, so the rating is context rather than a disqualifier.

Picking by situation

You were counting Shopify Audiences as a reason to upgrade to Plus

Confirm your eligibility on all three gates first — particularly the geographic one. If you fail it, remove Audiences from your upgrade math. What Plus reliably gives you sits elsewhere, in checkout customization and API limits. We covered the Plus-gated pieces of B2B in a separate post.

You want better targeting this week, whatever your plan

Build a customer segment — "2+ orders," "no purchase in 90 days" — export it, and load it into Meta Custom Audiences and Google Customer Match. Suppression alone moves prospecting efficiency. It costs nothing.

You don't want to maintain CSV exports by hand

Look at tools that sync segments to ad platforms, Klaviyo being the most widely reviewed. No Japanese UI, so English comfort is a prerequisite for the operator. Our comparison of email app billing models covers the messaging side.

You specifically want external data for prospecting

There's no substitute if you're ineligible. The realistic move is improving the quality of first-party signal you hand to the platforms' own models — Meta's Advantage+ and Google's Performance Max — which means clean customer segments and a properly configured Conversions API.

Pre-install checklist

  • Is your store based in and selling to the United States or Canada?
  • Are you on Shopify Plus, using Shopify Payments?
  • Is Shopify Network Intelligence enabled in privacy settings?
  • Have you built customer segments, and do you know the CSV export path?
  • Are your customer lists loaded into Meta Custom Audiences and Google Customer Match?
  • Are existing customers suppressed from prospecting campaigns?
  • Do any audiences in your ad account carry a [Not maintained since] prefix?
  • Does your privacy policy and consent capture cover sending customer data to ad platforms?

That last item isn't optional anywhere. What Shopify's native cookie banner does and doesn't manage is covered in a separate post.

Wrapping up

Three things to take away:

  1. Shopify Audiences has a geographic gate. Plus and Shopify Payments aren't enough; the store must be based in and selling to the US or Canada.
  2. The existing-customer half of it is free to rebuild on any plan. Shopify customer segments plus CSV export plus the free Meta and Google channel apps gets you suppression, remarketing, and lookalikes.
  3. The cross-merchant prospecting half can't be replaced. If you're ineligible, redirect that budget toward improving the first-party signal your ad platforms already consume.

Reading eligibility requirements in the help center before evaluating a feature ends up being the biggest time saver. Feature names imply availability that the fine print withholds.

Pricing and ratings are as listed on the Shopify App Store on September 1, 2026. Shopify Audiences' regional availability may expand, so check the current help center notes when you evaluate.

RelatedShop Pay Installments Rejects Capital One and Chase Cards — and Two Shopify Pages Disagree About Where Disputes Appear

Shop Pay Installments is free to activate, needs no app, and Shopify never publishes what it costs you — the rate is visible only inside your own admin. It also refuses Capital One and Chase credit cards, restricts monthly plans to debit cards only, excludes gift cards and subscriptions, and can't be turned off for individual products. Affirm can suspend your account for being password-protected, for having a non-English storefront, or for being primarily B2B. And Shopify's Getting paid page says disputes appear in your admin while its FAQ says they don't. If you fail the eligibility gates, the alternative is on-site messaging apps from Klarna, Afterpay, Sezzle, Zip, and PayPal — a category rated between 1.0 and 3.2 stars. Researched September 2, 2026.
