Before debating how to capture AI-search traffic, check a fact about your own store: Shopify is already sending your product data to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Meta. No app, no configuration, no additional transaction fee. A structured data layer called Shopify Catalog lists eligible products by default.
Per Shopify's own reporting, AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores grew 8x year over year in Q1 2026, and orders from AI-powered searches grew nearly 13x. New buyers place orders through AI channels at roughly twice the rate of other channels.
There's one condition that decides whether any of this applies to you. Shopify Catalog's requirements page lists, among the eligibility criteria, that the product must be available to ship to the United States or Canada. If your store doesn't ship there, you're not in Catalog — regardless of how good your product data is.
And a fact that cuts the other way: you cannot opt out of Shopify Catalog. The help center says so directly — "You can't opt out of Shopify Catalog itself." What you can turn off is per-channel access, not the underlying listing.
Below: the eligibility rules, how requirements differ by channel, what robots.txt does and doesn't do, and seven structured-data apps with real listing data. Research date: September 1, 2026.
The short version
If you sell to US buyers, you're already in ChatGPT and Copilot — and your store's own location doesn't matter. ChatGPT's requirement is that you sell to US customers; the store can be based anywhere. Open Sales channels > Agentic in your admin and look at what's already happening before you do anything else.
If you don't ship to the US or Canada, you don't meet Catalog's eligibility rules. That's a shipping-strategy decision, not an app decision, and no purchase changes it.
If you're evaluating an app because it generates llms.txt, stop. Every Shopify store already serves /agents.md, /llms.txt, and /llms-full.txt automatically, and the help center states plainly: "You don't need a third-party app to generate these files."
If you want out of AI channels, blocking GPTBot in robots.txt accomplishes nothing — Catalog syndication runs on a different layer. The only complete removal is unlisting the product, which also removes it from Google and from your own store's search.
Shopify Catalog eligibility
The published criteria:
- Store on the Starter plan or higher
- Store not password-protected
- Product has a title and at least one image
- Price greater than $0 (free products are excluded)
- Product is available to ship to the United States or Canada
- Published to Online Store, Hydrogen, or Headless
- Has an identifiable product URL
- Not unlisted and not hidden from search engines
- Not sensitive content
That shipping requirement is the one that quietly decides membership. If your shipping profiles don't cover the US or Canada, everything else on the list is moot. Conversely, if you already ship cross-border to North America, you're probably in Catalog whether or not you knew it.
The $0 exclusion is easy to miss too — free samples and give-away digital items don't get listed.
B2B-only products are excluded automatically. But the help center adds a caveat worth reading twice: if you're hiding prices through an app or a theme modification rather than through Shopify's B2B features, Shopify can't detect that, and those products may appear in AI channels. "Customers have to log in to see the price" is not, by itself, a guarantee.
Requirements differ by channel
Agentic Storefronts is one sales channel, but each connected platform has its own rules. As documented on September 1, 2026:
| Channel | Store location requirement | Direct checkout |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT (OpenAI) | None — must sell to US customers | No toggle; purchase completes on your own store |
| Microsoft Copilot | None — must sell to US customers | Shown only to US-based customers |
| Google AI Mode / Gemini | Store based in US, UK, Australia, or Canada | Shown only to US-based customers |
| Meta | US-based, selling to US customers | Limited release; US-based customers only |
Three things follow.
ChatGPT and Copilot don't care where your store is. A store based outside the US qualifies as long as it sells to US customers. A lot of coverage flattens all of this into "US only," which is wrong for the two largest channels.
Google AI Mode and Gemini do impose a location requirement — US, UK, Australia, or Canada — plus automatic product sync through the Google & YouTube sales channel. A store based elsewhere won't qualify no matter what it installs.
Direct in-chat checkout is shown only to US-based customers on every channel. Everyone else gets redirected to your storefront. So "buy inside the conversation" is currently a US-buyer experience, full stop.
Direct checkout also has functional limits. Subscriptions, bundles, customized products, and B2B-only products aren't supported. Custom pixels and GA4 don't fire. If AI-channel revenue is missing from your GA4 reports, that's the documented behavior, not a tracking bug. Local delivery and store pickup aren't available either.
robots.txt won't stop it
This is the most commonly misunderstood part.
Shopify's crawler controls sit in two layers: a network layer Shopify manages, and the robots.txt.liquid file you can edit. Blocking a crawler in robots.txt does not stop Catalog syndication. The help center is explicit about it. Block GPTBot all you want; the data flowing from Shopify Catalog to AI platforms travels a different path.
You can turn off Catalog access per channel — with a caveat that changes take up to 7 days to propagate. And the Shop app is exempt from the per-channel toggle. Hiding a product from every AI channel means unlisting it or using the seo.hidden metafield, which also removes it from Google Search and from search inside your own store. That's not a privacy setting, it's a decision to stop selling that product through discovery.
Catalog itself has no exit. As of September 1, 2026, opting out isn't an option Shopify offers.
You don't need an llms.txt app
One fact that directly kills a whole category of app feature.
Every Shopify store automatically serves /agents.md, /llms.txt, and /llms-full.txt. The help center states you don't need a third-party app to generate them. If you want to customize the output, you add an agents.md.liquid template to your theme.
So if an app's "AI search optimization" pitch is built around generating llms.txt, that specific capability is worth zero. Check it before you evaluate anything else in the listing.
What the admin shows you
Sales channels > Agentic has genuinely useful diagnostics.
Search preview shows how your products appear in AI channels.
Listing quality scores your listings on five signals: description word count, number of images, presence of reviews, variant completeness, and policy coverage. That list doubles as a prioritized to-do.
Per-channel reporting breaks out sales, sessions, and conversion rate by AI channel.
Shopify also publishes a free audit tool at shopify.com/agentic-readiness — paste a product page URL and it reports on the structured data and robots.txt access AI shopping assistants need. Run that before you evaluate any app.
Two footnotes: Headless stores don't yet support agentic storefronts performance analytics, and legal disclosures in a product description need to appear within the first 6,000 characters.
Seven structured-data and AI-search apps
As listed on the Shopify App Store on September 1, 2026. BFS = Built for Shopify badge.
| App | Developer | From | Free plan | Rating (count) | BFS | Primary use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Knowledge Base | Shopify | Free | Fully free | 3.2 (20) | No | AI-facing FAQ and store facts |
| Google & YouTube | Google LLC | Free to install | Yes | 4.5 (5,140) | No | Product feed sync |
| Smart SEO AI & Image Optimizer | Sherpas Design | $14.99/mo | Yes | 4.9 (852) | Yes | JSON-LD, LLM Catalog, MCP |
| Schema Plus ‑ AI & SEO JSON‑LD | SchemaPlus Inc | $10.99/mo | No (14-day trial) | 5.0 (534) | No | Structured data specialist |
| SEOLab: All in #1 SEO — AI SEO | Commerce Plus | Free | Yes | 5.0 (2,425) | Yes | JSON-LD, LLMS.txt, bulk optimization |
| Ilana's JSON‑LD for SEO (TM) | Ilana Davis LLC | $399/year | No (7-day trial) | 4.9 (350) | No | Structured data plus auditing |
| SEO Manager | venntov | venntov | $9/mo | No (7-day trial) | 4.7 (389) | No | SEO/GEO/AEO foundation |
Three observations.
Almost none of these affect Catalog eligibility. Catalog lists eligible products automatically; no app can get you listed. The only one in the table that touches a discovery path directly is Google & YouTube, because automatic product sync is a prerequisite for Google AI Mode and Gemini. The rest improve the quality of your structured data, which matters indirectly.
Structured-data apps carry a duplication risk. A Schema Plus review specifically warns that the app can duplicate the schema Shopify already outputs and recommends checking settings with support before enabling. SEOLab has recent reviews reporting that a bulk meta-tag update overwrote existing tags, and a bug where links disappeared in the in-app editor. "Install it and things improve" is not a safe assumption in this category.
Pricing models aren't comparable. SEOLab lists as free with JSON-LD and bulk optimization included; Ilana's JSON‑LD is $399 per year with no monthly option. Between those two extremes sits everything else. The $399 buys auditing, ongoing monitoring, and video training — a service, not just a feature set — which is a reasonable purchase for some stores and a very poor one for others.
Notes on the main apps
Shopify Knowledge Base (free, 3.2, 20 reviews) Shopify's own tool for seeing what AI agents are asking about your store and correcting the auto-generated store facts and FAQ. The help center is careful about what it claims: it improves accuracy, it doesn't change how often you appear in AI results. Reviews report hallucinations and Q&A generated in English regardless of the store's default language — the 3.2 rating reflects real friction.
Google & YouTube (free to install, 4.5, 5,140 reviews) A prerequisite for Google AI Mode and Gemini discovery, requiring both "Automatically sync products" and "Automatically sync shipping information." Note the channel's location requirement still applies — installing the app doesn't qualify a store based outside the US, UK, Australia, or Canada. Reviews include a substantial volume of complaints about Merchant Center misrepresentation suspensions.
Smart SEO AI & Image Optimizer (from $14.99/mo, 4.9, 852 reviews, Built for Shopify) One of the few listings that names an LLM Catalog and an MCP server as features. JSON-LD requires the Pro plan; the free tier doesn't include it. 20-language support makes it a reasonable fit for cross-border stores.
Schema Plus ‑ AI & SEO JSON‑LD (from $10.99/mo, 5.0, 534 reviews) Structured data specialist. Lite covers 5 product schemas; unlimited is Premium at $34.99/mo. Human onboarding is offered, which matters if there's no developer on the team. Confirm the schema-duplication question with support during setup.
SEOLab: All in #1 SEO — AI SEO (free, 5.0, 2,425 reviews, Built for Shopify) Lists as free while including JSON-LD, LLMS.txt, and bulk optimization, with 2,425 reviews behind a 5.0. Back up before running any bulk update, given the overwrite reports.
Ilana's JSON‑LD for SEO (TM) ($399/year, 4.9, 350 reviews) Annual billing only, the most expensive of the seven. Includes auditing, ongoing monitoring, and video training — a hands-on engagement rather than a plugin. There are one-star reviews about the no-refund policy. Suited to US-focused stores that lean heavily on Merchant Center.
Choosing by situation
Selling cross-border to the US. Install Google & YouTube (free) and enable both auto-sync settings. Then open Sales channels > Agentic and work through the Listing quality signals — description length and image count first. Add Smart SEO or Schema Plus for structured data depth.
Not shipping to the US or Canada. You don't meet Catalog eligibility. The decision in front of you is about shipping coverage, not apps. In the meantime, leave robots.txt alone and invest in JSON-LD and agents.md for open-web visibility.
Zero budget. SEOLab, free and Built for Shopify. Back up before bulk operations.
Schema accuracy first, no developer. Schema Plus, with the duplication question raised during onboarding.
Already running an SEO app. Confirm /agents.md and /llms.txt are already served before paying for a feature that generates them.
Before you install
- Do your products ship to the US or Canada? (Required for Catalog eligibility)
- Any $0-priced products? (Excluded from Catalog)
- Is the store password-protected?
- Have you opened Sales channels > Agentic and reviewed Listing quality?
- Have you run a product page through shopify.com/agentic-readiness?
- Have you accounted for AI-channel revenue not appearing in GA4? (Custom pixels and GA4 don't fire on direct checkout)
- Are you hiding B2B prices via an app or theme edit rather than Shopify's B2B features? (Shopify can't detect that)
- Are legal disclosures within the first 6,000 characters of your product descriptions?
- Will a structured-data app duplicate Shopify's default schema?
- Have you backed up before using any bulk-update feature?
The bottom line
- First check whether you're eligible at all. No shipping to the US or Canada means no Catalog listing
- If you are eligible, syndication is already happening. No app gets you listed; apps can only improve the data quality
- Channel requirements differ. ChatGPT and Copilot ignore store location; Google AI Mode and Meta don't
- There's no exit. Catalog has no opt-out, and robots.txt doesn't stop it
- Every store already serves llms.txt. Don't pay for that feature

Campaign Autopilot generates and runs marketing tactics from your store data, at no fee. But it requires Shopify Payments, excludes the Agentic plan, and each of its four channels carries separate eligibility. Shop Campaigns alone is limited to 24 countries and five currencies. And the requirements page says every tactic needs your approval, while the setup page says you can let Autopilot create campaigns on its own — a contradiction worth resolving before you connect an ad account. Plus: pausing Autopilot cancels scheduled email automations. Researched September 1, 2026.
