Shopify Collabs Has Stopped Accepting New Creators — And Discover Was Already US, UK, and Canada Only

Shopify's own affiliate app carries a line in its Help Center that most write-ups miss: Collabs isn't accepting new creator signups at this time. Discover eligibility was already limited to creators in the US, Canada, and the UK. So an open access program still activates — it just points at a pool that's regionally capped and closed to new entrants. Plus what the 2.9% processing fee is actually charged on, a 4.1 rating with 21% one-star reviews, and three affiliate apps that take 0% to 3% of referral revenue on top of monthly fees. What you will learn

Shopify ships its own affiliate app: Shopify Collabs. Free to install, pays creators automatically through your Shopify bill, integrates with Shopify Flow.

On paper that's a strong reason not to install anything else. Most write-ups land on "start with Collabs."

But as of September 1, 2026, the Help Center page for Collabs Discover opens with this:

Collabs isn't accepting new creator signups at this time.

And the requirements section below it states that to use Discover, a creator needs to be located in the United States, Canada, or the United Kingdom.

Below: what Collabs actually does and doesn't do, straight from Shopify's documentation, and three affiliate apps compared on the same axes. Research date: September 1, 2026.

The short version

If you already work with a handful of creators, Collabs is enough. Direct invites still function. No monthly fee.

If you're trying to recruit new creators, Collabs currently doesn't do that job. You can activate an open access program, but the pool it reaches is regionally capped and closed to new signups.

If your creators are outside the US, UK, or Canada, Collabs is not an option for discovery. The open access program page says so explicitly.

If cost is the constraint, GOAFFPRO — Affiliate Marketing is the only one of the three whose plans list no percentage of referral revenue.

If localized admin matters, UpPromote Affiliate Marketing is the only one of the three shipping non-English UI — at the cost of 1–2% of referral revenue on paid tiers.

What Collabs actually does

The Help Center defines Collabs as an affiliate marketing app. On the merchant side there are three recruitment paths.

Direct invite. Email a specific creator, they accept, you add them to an invite program.

Online store page. Put a Collabs recruitment page on your storefront and take applications through a form whose survey questions you control.

Open access program. Set a commission rate on all products or per collection, and your products appear in creators' Discover experience. Creators can generate affiliate links without your approval.

The third path is the "get found by creators" path — and that's where the constraints stack up.

Open access reaches US, UK, and Canada creators only

From the Collabs programs page, under considerations for the open access program:

The open access program is available to all merchants. However, only creators from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada are currently eligible.

Any merchant can activate it. Only creators in those three countries can act on it. Setting a commission rate does nothing for a creator based anywhere else.

And new creator signups are paused

The note at the top of the Collabs Discover page:

Collabs isn't accepting new creator signups at this time. If you're a creator that has existing brand partnerships, then you can still use the Collabs app or log in to the Collabs website to access your profile.

The same note confirms that merchant-side direct invites and application approvals still work.

Read together: Collabs currently functions as a management tool for relationships you already have, not as a marketplace for finding new ones.

Eligibility and cost

  • Plans: all Shopify plans except Starter and Retail
  • Install: free
  • Automatic payment processing fee: 2.9%

The Help Center gives a worked example: on a $100 USD affiliate sale with a 10% creator commission, the 2.9% fee comes to 29 cents. The fee is charged on the commission, not on the sale.

The payment mechanics have conditions worth knowing. Commissions enter a holding period first — canceled and fully refunded orders have their commission automatically canceled during it. Default is 30 days, configurable from 1 to 90. After the hold, the commission is added to your upcoming Shopify bill as a line item called "Shopify Collabs Commission," and is paid out to the creator after you pay that bill.

The step that catches merchants out:

Every creator you work with also needs to activate auto-payouts on their side to get paid through PayPal or bank transfer.

If the creator hasn't turned on auto-payouts, the commission moves to a "waiting for creator" state after the hold expires. Configuring your side isn't sufficient.

Automatic payments are handled in USD and charged in your Shopify bill's currency. If that isn't USD, local currency conversion fees may apply.

The rating breakdown

As of September 1, 2026, Shopify Collabs is rated 4.1 on the Shopify App Store across 397 reviews: 213 five-star, 33 four-star, 36 three-star, 31 two-star, and 84 one-star. That's roughly 21% one-star — high for a first-party Shopify app.

When you need a third-party app

Given those constraints, the reasons to install something else are specific.

Your creators are outside the US, UK, or Canada. This is the big one. If you're recruiting in any other market, the Collabs discovery path doesn't reach them.

You want multi-level structures or performance bonuses. Collabs' feature list includes tiered benefits and custom commissions but not multi-level tracking.

You want fraud protection. There's no fraud prevention item in Collabs' listed features.

You want payout methods beyond the Shopify bill. Collabs consolidated payments through Shopify billing; manual payments stopped tracking new commissions as of January 8, 2024.

You need non-English admin UI.

Searching the Shopify App Store for "affiliate marketing" returns 2,386 apps as of September 1, 2026. Three, metered differently:

Three things the table shows.

"Free" and "cheap" diverge once revenue scales. UpPromote and Refersion take a percentage of referral revenue on top of the monthly fee. At $50,000/month in referral revenue and a 2% rate, that's $1,000/month beyond the subscription. GOAFFPRO's paid plan is a flat $49 with no revenue percentage listed.

Collabs' 2.9% and the apps' 1–3% are charged on different bases. Collabs charges 2.9% of the commission paid — Shopify's own example is 29 cents on a $100 sale with 10% commission. UpPromote and Refersion state their percentages against referral revenue. Same symbol, potentially a 10x difference in base.

A high rating isn't a safety rating. GOAFFPRO sits at 4.6, but its June and July 2026 one-star reviews describe affiliates hijacking existing discount codes and UTM parameters to claim attribution, and coupon aggregator sites scraping codes and capturing sales from customers already on the merchant's email list. The developer's reply states that GoAffPro doesn't charge commission on affiliate sales. In affiliate programs, the losses usually come from attribution fraud, not from the commission rate.

UpPromote Affiliate Marketing

Best fit: running affiliate and influencer programs together, with localized admin.

Key features: multiple concurrent programs with flexible commissions, bonuses, and gift rewards; leak-proof discount links; fraud detection; blocklists; automated PayPal payouts; real-time ROI reporting. Creator discovery is a separate add-on starting at $39/month.

Strength: 3,670 reviews at 4.9, with the Built for Shopify badge. Ships in 17 languages including German, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.

Watch out for: paid tiers layer a revenue percentage on the monthly fee — Growth $29.99 + 2%, Professional $89.99 + 1.5%, Enterprise $199.99 + 1%. The free plan caps at $3,000 USD/month in referral revenue; Growth lists 300 monthly referrals approved, Professional 600. Creator discovery is billed separately.

Pricing: as of September 1, 2026 — free / $29.99 + 2% / $89.99 + 1.5% / $199.99 + 1%. 17% off annual, 14-day trial on paid tiers.

Right for: stores past $3,000/month in referral revenue that need fraud controls and non-English UI.

Refersion Affiliate Marketing

Best fit: precise first-party attribution and automated tax paperwork.

Key features: cookieless first-party tracking domain, payouts via PayPal, ACH, and bank transfer, 1099 automation, AI-assisted affiliate discovery, the Refersion Marketplace, unlimited affiliate and click tracking.

Strength: listed since April 2013 — the longest history of the four. Multi-currency and SKU/email-level tracking are named on the upper tier.

Watch out for: the price jump is steep. Launch is $39/month plus 3% of affiliate revenue; the next tier is Growth at $199/month plus 2%. There's nothing between them. The App Store listing notes that Refersion, Inc. may bill you outside your Shopify invoice, so charges may not consolidate. English only.

Pricing: as of September 1, 2026 — Marketplace (free, offer listing only) / $39 + 3% / $199 + 2%. 20–26% off annual.

Right for: US-focused programs at meaningful scale that need 1099 handling automated.

GOAFFPRO — Affiliate Marketing

Best fit: running an affiliate program without a revenue-linked fee.

Key features: branded affiliate portal, automated referral tracking and order attribution, post-checkout popup, Android and iPhone apps for affiliates, multi-level reward plans.

Strength: the free plan states unlimited affiliates and unlimited revenue. The $49 Premium tier is flat, with no revenue percentage listed. The gap versus the other two widens as referral revenue grows.

Watch out for: the low-star reviews contain specific fraud reports. A July 2026 review describes paying out more than $20,000 in what the merchant characterizes as fraudulent commissions after affiliates hijacked existing discount codes and UTM parameters. A June 2026 review raises coupon aggregator scraping. If you install it, settle your discount-code policy and attribution rules first. Rated 4.6, with 36 one-star reviews out of 890. English only.

Pricing: as of September 1, 2026 — free / $49 per month. 15-day trial on the paid plan.

Right for: high referral revenue, an aversion to revenue-linked fees, and the willingness to run fraud controls yourself.

Picking by situation

A handful of existing partners

Shopify Collabs. Direct invites still work and there's no monthly fee. Confirm the 2.9% processing fee and that each creator has enabled auto-payouts on their side.

Recruiting new creators outside the US, UK, and Canada

Collabs can't. UpPromote gives you a recruitment page plus localized UI.

Large referral revenue, minimize the rate

GOAFFPRO. Flat $49 with no revenue percentage — but you own the fraud controls.

Fraud and coupon leakage are the priority

UpPromote. Leak-proof discount links, fraud detection, and blocklists are the only such features named across these listings.

US market with tax automation

Refersion. 1099 automation is in the feature list. Note the $39 → $199 gap with nothing between.

Pre-install checklist

  • Where are the creators you want to recruit? (Outside US/UK/CA, Collabs' discovery path doesn't reach them.)
  • Do you need new recruitment, or just management of existing partners?
  • Beyond the monthly fee, is there a percentage of revenue?
  • Is that percentage charged on referral revenue or on commission paid?
  • Are fraud prevention and leak protection in the feature list?
  • Is PayPal the only payout rail, or are bank transfer and ACH available?
  • Does billing consolidate into your Shopify invoice, or arrive separately?
  • Do you need non-English admin UI?
  • Can you run one real creator from link issuance to payout during the trial?

Bottom line

Three steps, in order.

  1. Decide where your creators are before anything else. Shopify Collabs' discovery path is limited to US, UK, and Canada creators and is currently closed to new signups. That single fact settles the choice for most stores outside those markets.
  2. Read past "free" to the percentage. UpPromote and Refersion take 1–3% of referral revenue on top of the subscription; GOAFFPRO doesn't. Past a certain revenue, that gap outweighs the monthly difference.
  3. Check whether fraud prevention is in the feature list. Affiliate program losses usually come from code leakage and bad attribution, not from the commission rate.

Pricing and features change. Check each app's Shopify App Store listing and the Help Center before you commit.

RelatedShopify Instagram Feed Apps: You're Paying for Meta's API Tier, Not the Gallery

Every Shopify Instagram feed app puts the same two things behind its paid tiers: hashtag and mention feeds, and how often the feed refreshes. That is not a pricing choice — it maps onto Meta's own API structure. Hashtag Search is unavailable in the Instagram Login setup and requires the Facebook Login configuration, a linked Facebook Page, and App Review. We priced three real apps from the US App Store on September 2, 2026: refresh interval alone ranges from every 24 hours on a free plan to every 20 minutes at $98.99/month. And because Meta's long-lived tokens last 60 days, a feed that stops updating usually fails silently rather than showing an error.
