Search for how to sell digital files on Shopify and you'll be told to install "Digital Downloads." Open the App Store listing today and the app is called Shopify Digital Products. The URL is still apps.shopify.com/digital-downloads, which is why the rename went largely unnoticed, but the help center heading now reads "Digital Products" too.
The rename came with a real change in scope. The app used to attach a file to a product and email a link. It now also does link selling: you can sell access to a Notion page, a Calendly booking slot, a Teachable course, or a Vimeo video as a Shopify product. The catch is that the list of accepted providers is exactly twelve names long.
And there's a fact that almost every comparison article skips. The native app has no bandwidth limit on downloads. Paid digital-delivery apps price almost universally on storage tiers and monthly bandwidth, so this one line in Shopify's documentation determines whether a store needs to pay at all.
Below: what the native app actually does, where it breaks, and five real apps compared on the same axes. All prices are USD as listed on the Shopify App Store on September 1, 2026.
The short version
If you sell PDFs, ebooks, sheet music, sewing patterns, or photo packs in the tens-to-hundreds-of-megabytes range, Shopify Digital Products is enough. It's free, bandwidth is uncapped, and it handles files up to 5 GB. The reasons to pay for something else are specific, and they're listed below.
If you need license keys, PDF stamping, or video streaming, the native app can't do it. Look at the App Store's own structured feature tags: the only security tag on Shopify Digital Products is "File hosting." No license key tag. No watermarks tag. No streaming tag.
If bandwidth is your worry, Digital Downloads ‑ Fileflare is the only paid app here that advertises "Unlimited download bandwidth" on every tier. Sky Pilot charges for overage, which makes video costs hard to forecast.
If you need a Japanese admin UI, your options narrow to three: the native app, Fileflare, and Sky Pilot. The rest don't list Japanese.
What Shopify Digital Products does natively
Built by Shopify. Free. Rated 4.7 across 1,149 reviews. Launched November 16, 2012. No Built for Shopify badge. Listed languages include Japanese.
From the help center, the documented specifications:
Maximum file size is 5 GB. You can attach multiple files per variant, and archive formats like .zip work. You cannot upload folders — bundling means zipping first.
There is no bandwidth limit on downloads. Shopify's help center says so directly, and adds that the bandwidth figure shown in the app's menu is informational only. This is the specification that sits in direct tension with how every paid competitor prices itself.
Download limits are set per variant, default unlimited. If a product has multiple variants, you must set the limit on each one individually.
Link selling accepts twelve providers only: Notion, Calendly, Acuity, Kajabi, Teachable, Thinkific, Google Drive/Docs, Dropbox, Canva, YouTube, Vimeo, and Figma. URLs from anywhere else are rejected. A file on your own server, or a link to any other SaaS, cannot be sold this way. Also worth knowing: each time a customer opens a link, it counts against the variant's download limit.
Where the native app bites
This is the part that shows up in support tickets rather than in feature comparisons.
Share links never expire and aren't tied to anyone. You can copy a shareable download link per variant from the admin — handy for resending to a customer whose email bounced. But the help center is explicit: share links aren't tied to a specific customer or order, they don't expire, and anyone holding the link can download up to the variant's limit. Post one publicly and you cannot revoke it. The download limit is your only brake.
Replacing a file breaks existing customers. The help center opens with this caution: if you edit or delete a digital file, customers who already purchased won't be able to access their download via their existing link. You get a prompt to email existing customers the updated link, and getting that choice wrong generates inbox traffic.
Fulfillment setting changes apply retroactively. Shopify documents it as: "Any changes you make to fulfillment settings will affect all past and future sales for that variant." Flip automatic to manual and every prior sale of that variant is affected.
Checkout-page downloads require a paid Shopify plan. Adding the download block to the Thank you or Order status page is documented as requiring that you've selected a Shopify subscription plan. You can't validate it on a trial store. Separately, if manual fulfillment is on, the download link won't appear on the Thank you / Order status page even after you mark the order fulfilled.
The "50 files per product" limit is not an official specification. You'll see this cited widely. The source is a February 2024 Shopify Community post from a merchant, who says in the post itself that the limit is undocumented in the help files. The only reply is from another community member. No Shopify staff response. Treat it as an unverified merchant observation, not a spec.
Five apps compared
Native app included, same axes throughout. All figures from Shopify App Store listings on September 1, 2026.
| App | Developer | Rating (reviews) | BFS | Free plan | Cheapest paid | Download bandwidth | Japanese UI |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Digital Products | Shopify | 4.7 (1,149) | No | Fully free | — | Unlimited | Yes |
| Digital Downloads ‑ Fileflare | Kestrel | 4.8 (169) | Yes | 1 GB storage | $19/mo | Unlimited, all tiers | Yes |
| Sky Pilot ‑ Digital Downloads | Sky Pilot | 4.8 (417) | Yes | 100 MB / 1 GB per month | $9/mo | Metered overage | Yes |
| Digital Downloads PDF file BIG | Penida | 5.0 (868) | Yes | 250 MB / 50 orders | $9.99/mo | 50 GB – 1 TB | No |
| EDP ‑ Easy Digital Products | Axel Hardy | 5.0 (192) | No | 3 products / 30 orders per month | $14.99/mo | Not listed | No |
| Digital Downloads PDF Pendora | Henqq ecommerce LLC | 5.0 (1,200) | Yes | Listed as "Free" only | No pricing published | Not listed | No |
Three things fall out of this table.
Bandwidth is what determines the price structure. Sky Pilot's free tier gives 1 GB per month; Starter ($9) gives 15 GB with $2/GB overage; Lite ($24.99) gives 50 GB with $1.50/GB; Growth ($54.99) gives 200 GB with $1/GB. A 100 MB PDF delivered 200 times is 20 GB. For video, overage can easily exceed the base subscription. Fileflare goes the other way: all four tiers (free, $19, $29, $39) advertise unlimited bandwidth and price purely on storage — 1 GB, 50 GB, 100 GB, 1 TB.
"Free plan" means very different things here. The native app is free with no functional ceiling. Fileflare's free tier includes 1 GB of storage with unlimited bandwidth and no file-size cap. But EDP's free tier is 30 digital orders per month, 3 products, 100 MB, and file BIG's is 250 MB and 50 orders — those are trial allowances, not operating tiers. Sky Pilot's free tier at 1 GB monthly bandwidth exhausts after ten downloads of a 100 MB file.
Pendora publishes no pricing at all. The header reads "Free" and the pricing section on the listing is empty. It carries a Built for Shopify badge and 1,200 reviews, but you cannot determine from the listing where free ends. That's a question for the developer before you install.
What the App Store's own feature tags reveal
Shopify tags every app in the Digital products category with structured capability labels. They're a more neutral comparison surface than vendor copy, so here they are verbatim.
Shopify Digital Products — Download management: Email delivery, Download limits, Unlimited downloads. File security: File hosting. That's the complete list.
Digital Downloads ‑ Fileflare — adds Bulk upload, Custom download pages, Thank you page, Streaming, Analytics, SMTP, Externally hosted, Custom links, and Amazon S3 storage. Security: File encryption, IP restrictions, Watermarks, File hosting. Bringing your own S3 bucket and setting IP restrictions are the distinguishing capabilities.
Sky Pilot — Bulk upload, Thank you page, Streaming, Analytics. Security: License key, Watermarks. Video streaming and PDF stamping unlock on Growth ($54.99), as do license keys.
Digital Downloads PDF file BIG — carries the widest security set: Access code, License key, File encryption, IP restrictions, Password protection, Watermarks, File hosting. No Streaming tag, though. Developer is Penida, based in Paris; launched November 17, 2022.
EDP ‑ Easy Digital Products — Security: Access code, License key, Watermarks, File hosting. Pricing adds an order-volume dimension: each paid tier includes 100 digital orders per month with $0.15 per additional order. Storage is generous (100 GB at $14.99, 200 GB at $24.99, 500 GB at $44.99), but per-order fees accumulate as volume grows.
So the reason to leave the native app is not capacity. It's whether you need license keys, watermarking, streaming, or access restrictions. If capacity is your only concern, 5 GB per file with unlimited bandwidth covers a surprising amount of ground.
Choosing by situation
Solo or small store selling patterns, sheet music, or ebooks
Start with Shopify Digital Products. Free, unlimited bandwidth, 5 GB per file. Revisit only when you want purchaser details stamped into the PDF — at which point Fileflare Basic ($19) or file BIG Starter ($9.99) become relevant.
You want to deter redistribution and identify the buyer
PDF stamping plus IP restrictions is a Fileflare and file BIG combination. Fileflare puts PDF stamping on the $19 tier and IP limitations on the $39 tier. file BIG includes PDF stamping from $9.99 and carries the IP restrictions tag. Note that file BIG doesn't list Japanese, so the admin runs in English.
You want to sell video course access without letting people download it
Streaming tags belong to Fileflare, Sky Pilot, and Pendora. Fileflare puts video, audio, and PDF streaming on Premium ($39). Sky Pilot unlocks video streaming and PDF stamping on Growth ($54.99), but adds $1/GB above 200 GB — so until you know your viewing volume, Fileflare's flat structure is easier to budget.
You need to issue software or game license keys
The native app can't. License key tags belong to Sky Pilot, file BIG, EDP, and Pendora. EDP is distinctive in offering license keys and API access even on its free tier, which makes it a reasonable place to test the workflow — within the 30-orders-per-month ceiling.
You're selling access to content hosted elsewhere
If it lives on Notion, Teachable, or Thinkific, the native link-selling feature already covers it. No app needed. For providers outside the twelve, Fileflare's "Custom links" and EDP's "Files by URL" are candidates, but verify the actual behaviour before committing.
Pre-install checklist
- Is every file under 5 GB? If not, you need zip splitting or a paid app
- Have you estimated monthly transfer (file size × expected downloads)? On metered apps, that number is the invoice
- Do you need the download link on the checkout pages? The native app requires a paid Shopify plan for that
- Will you ever replace files? Decide the re-issue flow for existing customers first
- Have you set a policy for share links? Native share links never expire and work for anyone
- Can you live with setting download limits one variant at a time?
- Is an English-only admin acceptable? file BIG, EDP, and Pendora don't list Japanese
- Do you know what happens to already-issued download links if you uninstall the paid app?
Bottom line
Four questions, in order:
- Does what you need fall under license keys, watermarking, streaming, or access restriction? If not, the native app very likely suffices
- Estimate monthly transfer volume. Unlimited (native, Fileflare) versus metered (Sky Pilot) diverge sharply as file weight increases
- Read every "free plan" as either a trial allowance or an operating tier. Native and Fileflare are operating tiers; EDP, file BIG, and Sky Pilot's free tiers are for validation
- Run a real purchase-to-download on a test store before launch. Checkout display and email deliverability in particular can't be judged from settings alone
App Store pricing and feature tags change. Everything here reflects listings as of September 1, 2026 — verify on each app's page before you install.
Shopify's admin address validation is on by default, free, on every plan, and supports the US. Checkout-time validation is one toggle away. Shopify's own documentation then warns that running a third-party address validation app at the same time can create conflicting suggestions and reduce checkout conversion — you are meant to pick one. That reframes the whole category: apps are not there to duplicate deliverability checking, they are there to enforce policy Shopify's validator does not enforce, like blocking PO boxes or requiring an apartment number. We priced four real apps from the US App Store on September 2, 2026, spanning $4.99/month flat, $0.04 per order, and one that requires a separate subscription billed outside Shopify.
