What you will learn

Run a Shopify store and every missing capability sends you back to the App Store. Checking whether Shopify publishes a free app for it first is a sensible order of operations — no monthly fee, integrated into admin, and presumably kept in step with platform changes.
That expectation is only half right. As of August 31, 2026, Shopify lists itself as the developer of 40 apps in the App Store, and their ratings run from 1.3 to 5.0, with 12 of them below 3.0. First-party is not a quality guarantee.
There's a second complication: the boundary between Shopify's built-in features and Shopify's own apps is nearly invisible. Bundles, subscriptions, storefront search filtering — capabilities most merchants assume are native — only work once you install a free app that Shopify distributes.
This article checks the ratings of all 40 first-party apps, then sorts out which ones deserve a look first, which need verifying before you trust them, and which constraints exist even on Shopify's own apps. Researched August 31, 2026.
The short version
Among first-party apps, the ones with over 1,000 reviews all rate well. The seven that qualify — Shopify Flow, Shop, Shopify Inbox, Shopify Messaging, Shopify Marketplace Connect, Shopify Translate & Adapt and Digital Products — sit at 4.2 or above. That's the layer to start from.
Three apps have hundreds of reviews and still rate below 3.0. Shopify Search & Discovery (2.7 across 464), Shopify Bundles (2.8 across 543) and Retail Barcode Labels (2.3 across 466). With that sample size, the scores aren't noise. Verify them against your own requirements before going live.
"First-party" doesn't mean "no constraints" either. Shopify Flow gates some features by plan, Shopify Bundles can't coexist with subscriptions or pre-orders, and Shopify Subscriptions can't coexist with bundles. Being published by Shopify and being unconstrained are separate things.
Shopify's own apps are not "native features"
Get the framing right first.
What's built into Shopify and what Shopify distributes as a free app are different categories. The developer page for Shopify lists 40 apps. Shopify builds them, but they don't work until you install them — and you can uninstall them.
Take bundles. The Shopify Help Center states that to create product bundles on your store, you must have a bundles app installed. It then explains that fixed bundles and multipacks can use the free Shopify Bundles app, which is available on all Shopify plans. Mix-and-match bundles can't be built with Shopify Bundles at all — those need a third-party app or, on Shopify Plus, the Bundles APIs.
Subscriptions work the same way. Before configuring anything in Shopify admin, you follow the setup instructions of a subscription app from the App Store — with the free first-party Shopify Subscriptions app given as the example.
So "is the native feature enough?" becomes, across most of these areas, "is the free first-party app enough?" Miss that substitution and you're comparing on the wrong ground.
The overall picture
Below are 16 of the 40 apps on Shopify's developer page as of August 31, 2026 — the ones most likely to come up in general store operations.
| App | Purpose | Pricing shown | Rating (reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Flow | Workflow automation | Free | 4.7 (12,396) |
| Shop | Selling through the Shop app | Free | 4.8 (8,625) |
| Shopify Inbox | Chat support | Free | 4.6 (5,504) |
| Shopify Messaging | Email, SMS and WhatsApp campaigns | Free to install | 4.7 (4,251) |
| Shopify Marketplace Connect | Listing on external marketplaces | Free to install | 4.2 (1,961) |
| Shopify Translate & Adapt | Multilingual translation | Free | 4.5 (1,397) |
| Digital Products | Selling digital goods | Free | 4.7 (1,149) |
| Shopify Subscriptions | Subscriptions | Free | 3.7 (758) |
| Shopify Forms | Forms and list building | Free | 4.5 (678) |
| Shopify Bundles | Fixed bundles and multipacks | Free | 2.8 (543) |
| Retail Barcode Labels | Barcode label printing | Free | 2.3 (466) |
| Shopify Search & Discovery | Storefront search and filtering | Free | 2.7 (464) |
| Shopify Collabs | Influencer partnerships | Free to install | 4.1 (397) |
| Point of Sale | In-person selling | Free plan available | 3.2 (390) |
| Shopify Order Printer | Invoices and packing slips | Free | 3.6 (359) |
| Shopify Checkout Blocks | Checkout customization | Free | 4.3 (187) |
Across all 40: 10 rate 4.5 or above, 12 rate below 3.0, and 18 fall between. Almost everything is free or free to install. The only ones showing an explicit monthly price are Shopify TSE (KassenSichV) for German tax compliance at $9/month, and Point of Sale with a free plan available.
Three things fall out of that.
First, review count and rating correlate clearly. All seven apps with more than 1,000 reviews sit at 4.2 or above — apps used widely enough, and long enough, to have had improvement cycles run through them. Apps with a handful of reviews tell you very little either way.
Second, three apps stand out as anomalies: enough reviews to matter, and low scores anyway. Retail Barcode Labels (2.3 across 466), Shopify Search & Discovery (2.7 across 464) and Shopify Bundles (2.8 across 543). "Too new to have settled" doesn't explain those numbers.
Third, being free has nothing to do with quality. Most of the table is free, and it contains both a 4.8 and a 2.3. "It's free and first-party, so install it" is defensible on cost and indefensible on operations.
Worth looking at first
Shopify Flow
The largest review base of the 40, and a 4.7 rating. It watches your store for events and lets you build workflows from triggers, conditions and actions — alert when stock drops below a threshold, tag customers based on order conditions, and so on.
Per the Help Center, Shopify Flow is a free app available on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans, but some features are plan-gated. The Send HTTP Request action — the one you need to notify external systems — is available on Grow, Advanced and Plus only, not Basic. Tasks created by custom partner apps are Plus only. Usage limits also vary by plan, following the API rate limits for that plan.
If your automation design depends on outbound calls to external systems, confirm your plan before you build.
Shopify Messaging
This is what used to be Shopify Email. As of August 31, 2026 the App Store URL shopify-email redirects to shopify-messaging, with the scope widened from email alone to email, SMS and WhatsApp. Rating 4.7 across 4,251 reviews.
Pricing is free to install, with the listing stating 10,000 emails per month free and additional volume from $1 per 1,000 emails per month. It supports 21 languages including Japanese. Worth checking that free allowance before signing a separate email marketing contract.
Shopify Translate & Adapt
4.5 across 1,397 reviews. A free app for translating store content and adapting it per market. If multilingual is on the roadmap, start by testing whether this covers it.
Shopify Forms
4.5 across 678 reviews. Builds forms for email list acquisition, wholesale account applications and visitor data collection — a reasonable comparison point before paying for a forms app.
Verify carefully before trusting
Shopify Search & Discovery
2.7 across 464 reviews, split 240 five-star against 90 one-star. The listing covers filter customization, synonym groups, product boosting, related product recommendations and search analytics, in 20 languages including Japanese.
The reason to test rather than assume: reviews from 2026 include specific complaints about matching behaviour in non-Latin scripts — partial matches ceasing to work after a change, weak handling of strings of Chinese characters in Japanese names and place names. One reviewer notes that adding the search terms as product tags produced acceptable behaviour.
If your customers search using product names in a language other than English, budget a verification step: run your real search terms and confirm the intended products appear.
Shopify Bundles
2.8 across 543 reviews. It creates fixed bundles and multipacks, and it's available on all plans. The incompatibility list in the Help Center is long enough to plausibly explain the rating.
Bundles aren't compatible with purchase options — subscriptions, pre-orders and try-before-you-buy. They aren't compatible with the Shopify Subscriptions app. Bundles have no shipping profile of their own; rates are calculated from the shipping profiles of the component products. If a component's SKU changes, you have to delete and recreate the entire bundle. Bundles can't contain other bundles, don't support import, export or bulk editing, and can't be used in exchanges.
There are eligibility conditions too: the store must use the Online Store sales channel or a custom storefront, and must be on an upgraded checkout. Stores using checkout.liquid customizations are incompatible with bundles.
Inventory behaves distinctively. Bundle inventory derives from component inventory, with the scarcest component setting the ceiling. A bundle of two chairs and one desk, with 15 chairs and 8 desks in stock, gives 15 ÷ 2 = 7.5 (rounded down to 7) against 8 ÷ 1 = 8, so 7 bundles are available. Products with untracked inventory, or set to continue selling when out of stock, are excluded from that calculation.
Shopify Subscriptions
3.7 across 758 reviews — 349 five-star against 148 one-star. As noted, it can't be combined with bundles. The Japanese-locale listing also carries a notice that the developer doesn't provide direct support in Japanese; the interface is localized, the support conversation isn't.
Retail Barcode Labels
2.3 across 466 reviews — the lowest score among the first-party apps with a review base in the hundreds. It creates and prints barcode labels, which ties directly to in-person retail operations. If you're building a POS workflow around it, print real labels on your real hardware before you commit.
Checklist for evaluating a first-party app
- Have you distinguished between what's built into Shopify and what requires installing a first-party app?
- Is the review count large enough to be informative? (A handful of reviews tells you little at any rating.)
- If the rating is below 3.0, do the low-rated reviews describe your use case?
- Are you planning to use any plan-gated feature (Shopify Flow's Send HTTP Request, for instance)?
- Is anything you plan to use alongside it listed as incompatible (bundles with subscriptions or pre-orders)?
- Have you separated interface localization from support-language availability?
- Have you checked the free allowance ceiling (Shopify Messaging's 10,000 emails per month, for instance)?
- Have you verified real behaviour with real data before going live?
Wrapping up
Four criteria cover most of the decision.
Don't conflate Shopify's built-in features with Shopify's apps — bundles, subscriptions and storefront search filtering all require installing something. Weigh review count as heavily as rating; the seven apps above 1,000 reviews all clear 4.2, while small samples tell you nothing. Where the review base is large and the rating is low, read the low-rated reviews and check whether the complaints land on your use case. And assume plan requirements and incompatibility conditions exist on first-party apps too, so check the combinations you intend to run before you build around them.
Checking "does the first-party app cover it?" before comparing paid third-party options removes a whole tier of choices before you spend anything. But pushing an unverified low-rated first-party app straight into production trades the cost saving for operational cost. Free or not, the sequence stays the same: run it in a test store first.
Shopify's admin address validation is on by default, free, on every plan, and supports the US. Checkout-time validation is one toggle away. Shopify's own documentation then warns that running a third-party address validation app at the same time can create conflicting suggestions and reduce checkout conversion — you are meant to pick one. That reframes the whole category: apps are not there to duplicate deliverability checking, they are there to enforce policy Shopify's validator does not enforce, like blocking PO boxes or requiring an apartment number. We priced four real apps from the US App Store on September 2, 2026, spanning $4.99/month flat, $0.04 per order, and one that requires a separate subscription billed outside Shopify.
