"If AI can generate sections now, can I cancel the page builder subscription?" Answering that starts with reading one sentence in Shopify's help center accurately.

Shopify Magic tools and experiences are available for free, regardless of your subscription plan. However, the access and availability of specific features might vary.

The second half is the story. "Magic is free" and "this feature works on my store" are separate questions.

The same availability section also says: "All generally available features are available to all plans and in all languages." So the default is universal, and anything narrower carries an explicit condition. AI theme generation carries one — your storefront has to be set to English. AI theme block generation's help page carries no equivalent language condition. Two features under the same brand, two different premises.

Below: what each feature actually produces, where it's stored, who owns it when it breaks, and how that compares with seven page builder and section apps. Research date: September 1, 2026. All prices are USD as listed on the Shopify App Store.

The short version

Non-English storefront? AI theme generation is out. Shopify's documentation is explicit.

AI theme block generation is worth trying. It's free, works from Basic up, and the output lands inside your own theme. If you need one to three static layout blocks, this may be the whole answer.

But nobody will help you when the generated code breaks. Shopify states that neither Shopify Support nor third-party theme developers cover it. That's the real gap versus an app.

If you're going the app route:

And "AI generation makes page builders obsolete" has several structural counterexamples. Those are at the end.

AI theme generation: English storefronts only

From the Themes page in your admin, you describe your business and Shopify generates a theme. The help center says:

This feature is only available if you're on the free trial, Basic, Grow, or Advanced plans and your storefront is set to English.

Two things are easy to skim past. First, the storefront language condition — this doesn't work on a non-English storefront. Second, Shopify Plus isn't in that list. Starter is also excluded; Starter stores get Spotlight only.

A single generation run produces up to three themes, added to Draft themes. They're positioned as free themes, and customization support follows the same policy as any Shopify free theme. Policy-violating topics won't generate, and there's a note about image rights.

Separately: while you're trialing a paid third-party theme, you can edit neither the theme code nor use the AI code generator.

AI theme block generation: a real Liquid file gets written

In the theme editor, you pick a section, then Add block → Generate, and enter a prompt. Prompts have to be at least five words.

What happens next is concrete:

the new liquid file for the block is added to the blocks folder in your theme's code

A real file lands inside your theme. Its contents include Liquid plus HTML, CSS, JSON, and JavaScript. You can edit it in the theme code editor, and you can delete it — though a deleted file can't be recovered.

Ask in the prompt for settings you can edit in the theme editor, and it generates with customization settings attached. After generation you can Keep, discard, or send follow-up instructions.

Requirements

Plans: free trial, Basic, Growth, Advanced, and Plus. Unlike theme generation, Plus is included. Starter is excluded.

On themes: the help center says it's available for all themes on the Shopify Theme Store, but not on vintage themes. Paid third-party themes require purchase first.

Permissions are gated too — store owner, organization owner, administrator, organization administrator, or a store role with Edit Code permission.

This part needs careful reading. The help center says "all themes on the Shopify Theme Store (except vintage)." shopify.dev states a stricter premise:

To make it possible for a section to accept AI generated blocks, it must accept theme blocks.

Theme blocks belong to the newest theme architecture. In Shopify's own feature comparison table, the "Theme blocks" row is marked unsupported (✘) for Online Store 2.0. Being on OS 2.0 doesn't automatically mean this works. Check which of your sections actually offer Generate in the theme editor.

One more thing documented only for developers: generated blocks aren't sections, so Shopify wraps them in a platform-generated section named _blocks.liquid. That section can't be called with {% section '_blocks' %} and doesn't appear in the theme editor's section list.

Theme blocks also carry a language-level constraint: they cannot access variables created outside the block, and cannot be passed variables the way a snippet can.

The line Shopify draws on support

This is the most important sentence for evaluating any of it.

Assistance with customizing or troubleshooting the code for blocks generated by Shopify Magic isn't supported by Shopify Support and third-party theme developers. If an AI-generated block causes problems with your theme, then you might need to delete it.

Shopify adds that AI-generated code may not always be perfect — it can produce errors, unexpected results, or code that doesn't fully meet accessibility or performance best practices — and that reviewing, testing, and verifying the block is your responsibility.

That's where the price of "free" sits. An app has a support desk. An AI-generated block does not.

Generated blocks belong to the theme

Shopify's documentation notes that content managed in the theme editor, theme code editor, and language editor is specific to each theme. A generated block is a file in that theme's blocks folder, so switching themes leaves it behind. Migration means copying it manually.

The app model inverts this. Per shopify.dev, apps built on the theme app extension framework don't edit theme code, surface automatically in the theme editor, deploy to all stores at once, are versioned, and serve assets from the Shopify CDN.

On theme updates, Shopify says only that the Liquid file generated by Shopify Magic is self-contained, and that you can still update your theme when new versions publish to the theme store. It does not say the generated block carries over into the updated theme. We treat that as unconfirmed.

Also unconfirmed, with no statement in either the help center or shopify.dev: any cap on generation count, whether generated blocks can integrate with apps, call external APIs, or read metafields, and whether a kept block can be regenerated. Absence of documentation isn't proof of non-support, so we won't assert either way.

The apps already have AI

"Can it generate with AI" stopped being the differentiator. PageFly lists AI page and section generation. GemPages has GemAI Image-to-Layout, turning an image or URL into an editable layout, plus MCP-based building. EComposer has an AI Page Builder. Shogun ships a separate app, Shogun ‑ AI Section Builder. Section Store advertises AI-assisted setup. SectionAI generates from text and from images or wireframes.

The differences moved to template library depth, CRO features, support, language coverage, and uninstall behavior.

What apps reach that a generated block can't

A Shopify Magic block is a theme asset. Structurally, that puts several things out of range.

• Dynamic data from an external server. Per shopify.dev, App proxy lets an app proxy requests from a Shopify URL to its own server and render external data on the storefront. One proxy route per app, and the write_app_proxy scope is required
• Anything involving Web Pixels or Shopify Functions. PageFly's data access includes "Edit store analytics: web pixels" and "Edit Shopify Functions: cart and checkout validations, cart transforms." EComposer also holds web pixels permissions
• Versioning and one-shot deployment across every store
• A support desk

If the requirement includes A/B testing, heatmaps, upsells, or funnel analytics, an AI-generated block is not a substitute.

Uninstall behavior runs in opposite directions

Check this before you cancel anything.

PageFly's official help states that on uninstall, all content published through PageFly is removed from your Shopify theme, along with PageFly's code and theme modifications, and it cannot be restored. Older write-ups you'll find in search say published pages survive; the current official documentation says otherwise. Note that this describes running the in-app Preferences → Account → Uninstall PageFly flow, and the same page also tells you to manually remove leftover code from theme.liquid if any remains.

Section Store, by contrast, states on its own blog that sections install as native .liquid files directly into the theme, so they remain even if you uninstall the app. That's a vendor claim we did not independently verify.

Shopify itself notes generally that some apps add code to your theme that isn't automatically removed on uninstall. For GemPages, EComposer, Shogun, and SectionAI we could not confirm uninstall residue from primary sources.

Notes worth carrying into a decision

PageFly ✦ AI Page Builder is one of the few page builders with a Japanese UI and has 5,681 reviews, the most in this set. The free plan is one slot — a page or a section — with 10 AI credits; the $24/mo Builder tier adds five slots, A/B testing, and AI translation. No Built for Shopify badge was displayed on its listing.

EComposer Landing Page Builder is the only one of the four page builders here carrying the Built for Shopify badge. Free covers one page or section with 50 AI credits, and annual billing is discounted. English UI only.

Shogun ‑ Landing Page Builder has a Draft Mode free plan that cannot publish anything. Its lowest paid tier is $39/mo, the highest entry price here. Features get split across separate apps — A/B testing lives in Shogun ‑ A/B Testing.

Shogun ‑ AI Section Builder is the closest direct competitor to Shopify Magic's block generation. Launched July 8, 2025: free gives one section and 10 prompts per day, $19/mo gives unlimited sections and 25 prompts per day. Publishing a prompt cap is information Shopify Magic doesn't provide. It advertises full version control and lists a Japanese UI. But at 3.5 across 8 reviews, the sample is too small to lean on. One detailed review claims generated sections can't be revised by the AI and have to be rebuilt from scratch; the developer disputes this publicly, so neither side is established.

Section Store: Theme Sections carries the Built for Shopify badge with 2,810 reviews, a one-time purchase model, and a design that keeps you inside the theme editor. Its App Store listing says only "Free to install. Additional charges may apply." with no figures, and its own site is internally inconsistent — the homepage says $15/mo for Plus with 700+ sections, its blog says $10/mo with 730+. Confirm actual cost directly before committing.

SectionAI ‑ AI Theme Section generates from images and wireframes, and Pro and above include one to three developer-built or developer-fixed sections per month. But with 11 reviews and usage durations concentrated in minutes to days — "8 minutes," "about 1 hour," "17 minutes" — only one two-month review offers anything about long-term operation.

Deciding, in order

1. On Starter, neither AI feature is available. Adding custom theme sections or blocks isn't supported at all
2. On a non-English storefront, AI theme generation is out. Block generation carries no documented language condition, so it's worth opening the theme editor and checking
3. On a vintage theme, or a theme with no sections that accept theme blocks, AI block generation is out. The choice becomes a theme migration or an app
4. If you need one to three static layout blocks, have the permissions, and can own the code, try AI block generation first. It's free
5. If the same section has to work across multiple themes or stores, use an app. App blocks deploy everywhere at once and are versioned — though Shopify notes you have to re-enable apps on a new theme after switching, so it isn't automatic
6. If you need A/B testing, heatmaps, upsells, or funnel analytics, use a page builder. PageFly for a Japanese UI; EComposer if the badge matters and English is fine
7. If you need someone accountable when it breaks, Shopify Magic isn't the answer. Choose an app or a Shopify Partner
8. Before cancelling any app, confirm its uninstall behavior. PageFly takes the published content with it
