Gift wrapping feels like table stakes for a store. Shopify doesn't ship it. There is no native gift wrap, no gift message field, no gift receipt, and — for merchants selling into Japan — no noshi, the ceremonial paper wrapper whose placement and heading text encode the occasion.
There's no help center page for any of it. Shopify's own enterprise blog post on gift wrapping walks through three approaches — sell wrapping as a product, build it into the cart in your theme, or use an app or Shopify Plus checkout extensions — and never points at a setting in the admin, because there isn't one. The only gift-adjacent native feature is gift cards.
If you can edit theme code, your first instinct is line item properties. That instinct is half right. You can build the selector. You cannot attach a price to it. That single constraint is why the do-it-yourself route always ends up needing a second mechanism.
Below: exactly what Shopify does natively, where the DIY approach breaks, and eight real gift apps compared on the same axes. Research date September 1, 2026. All prices are USD as listed on the Shopify App Store — including the Japanese-built apps, none of which price in yen.
The short version
If you need Japanese ceremonial gifting — occasion headings, inner versus outer noshi placement, mizuhiki designs — your options are Japanese-built apps only. The feature listings for the major Western apps (Wrapin, Gift Wrap Plus, Giftship) contain no equivalent concepts at all.
For the deepest noshi implementation, cocoron Gift currently leads: 32 occasion headings with mizuhiki imagery, inner/outer selection, and name inscription. It launched March 13, 2026 and has one review.
If you also need social gifting, split shipping, and Japanese warehouse integrations, All in gift is the one that lists Openlogi, Shippinno, Next Engine, and Logiless.
To start free, PAL's free tier (5 gift orders per month) is the only practical no-cost option, and it lists Japanese UI. It has no noshi-specific interface.
To avoid an app entirely, you can add a free wrapping product to the cart page. Shopify itself documents this approach and it works on every plan. It does not scale to occasion-based noshi selection.
What Shopify gives you natively
Line item properties. Put an input named properties[gift_note] inside the product form and its value rides along to the cart. Theme code only — text field, dropdown, file upload, whatever you need. On the cart page you loop item.properties to display it. Two units of the same product with different property values become separate cart lines.
Cart attributes. An input named attributes[delivery_note] creates an order-level custom field rather than a per-item one.
Order notes. On Shopify's free themes this is a theme setting, not code: Cart section, Subtotal, "Enable cart note." The label text is editable.
Shopify's help center draws the distinction sharply: order notes are instructions for the whole order, cart attributes are custom form fields on the cart page, and line item properties are product-specific customization specified on the product page.
Selling wrapping as a product is the documented no-app path. Create a "Gift wrapping" product, use variants for tiers, mark it as not requiring shipping, and place a product block or Buy Button on the cart page. Works on all plans.
Where the DIY approach breaks
Line item properties can't carry a price. Shopify's developer documentation defines properties purely as a mechanism for recording additional information. Nothing about price, nothing about inventory. This is precisely why Shopify's own blog routes paid wrapping through a separate product. Build it yourself and you end up with the selector (properties) and the charge (a separate product) living in two different systems, plus whatever synchronization logic you write between them. Add per-option pricing — different noshi types at different prices — and the complexity compounds fast.
No inventory tracking either. Properties hang off a variant; inventory lives on the variant. "Only 20 ceremonial envelopes left" isn't expressible.
Properties must live inside the product form. The docs state it directly: "Any property inputs need to be included inside the product form." So there's no way to express "apply this wrap to the whole order" through properties — that needs cart attributes or an order note. Which means the very first design decision is whether wrapping is per-item or per-order, because it determines both your implementation and your shortlist of apps.
Gift options inside checkout require Shopify Plus. Shopify's docs state that checkout UI extensions rendering on the information, shipping, and payment steps are "available only to stores on a Shopify Plus plan." Thank you and Order status page extensions are available on every plan except Shopify Starter — but those are post-purchase screens. If the customer must choose wrapping during checkout, Plus is the prerequisite.
And none of the Japanese ceremonial logic exists natively. Inner versus outer noshi, the correct heading for each occasion, mizuhiki cord design, the split between celebratory and condolence contexts, name inscription. None of it appears anywhere in Shopify's documentation — reasonably enough. Filling that gap is the whole job of the apps below.
Eight gift apps compared
Shopify's "Gift wrap and messages" category contains 53 apps. These eight cover the noshi-capable set, the Japanese-language set, and the review-count leaders. All figures as listed September 1, 2026.
| App | Developer (location) | Rating (reviews) | BFS | Free plan | Pricing | Japanese | Noshi-specific UI |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| cocoron Gift | cocoronApps (Ginza) | 5.0 (1) | No | None | $8.99/mo | JA only | Deepest |
| All in gift | Huckleberry (Setagaya) | 4.9 (129) | No | None | $9.90–$49/mo | JA only | Yes |
| Gift Options Plus | Dryworks (Ebisu) | 4.3 (8) | Verify | None | $3.99–$9.99/mo | JA + EN | Yes |
| Simple Noshi App | UnReact (Fukuoka) | 0.0 (0) | No | None | $6.99/mo | JA only | Yes |
| PAL ‑ Gift Wrap, Gift Note | Shree Balajee (New Delhi) | 4.8 (43) | Yes | 5 orders/mo | $5–$9.99/mo | JA UI | No |

| Giftship: Gift, Bundle & Ship | Gist (Victoria) | 4.8 (245) | No | None | $59.99–$399.99/mo | EN only | No |
| Gift Wrap Plus | Nulls.Net (Riga) | 4.9 (64) | No | 5 orders/mo | $3.99–$19.99/mo | EN only | No |
Four things fall out of this.
Require noshi and the field drops to four. cocoron Gift, All in gift, Gift Options Plus, and Simple Noshi App — all Japanese developers. The Western apps are mature general-purpose gift wrap tools that simply don't model the concepts.
Free plans are nearly absent. Only PAL (5 gift orders per month) and Gift Wrap Plus (5 gift orders, 1 gift product, store-wide options only) offer usable free tiers. Wrapin's "Free" is explicitly described as being for test stores and trial-plan stores. All four Japanese apps are paid-only with 7- to 14-day trials.
Pricing is bimodal. The Japanese apps and the smaller Western ones cluster at $3.99–$9.90. Giftship starts at $59.99 and adds $0.10 per order above 500. Giftship integrates with Klaviyo, ShipStation, TaxJar, and 1,600-plus carriers — it isn't a tool you'd pick for wrapping alone.
Review count and functional depth are inversely related here. Wrapin leads on reviews with 355 and has zero noshi support. cocoron Gift, with the deepest noshi implementation, has one review. For locale-specific requirements, review volume is a poor primary filter.
Notes on individual apps
cocoron Gift
cocoronApps, Ginza, Tokyo. Launched March 13, 2026. $8.99/month or $88.90/year, 7-day trial, Japanese interface only.
32 occasion headings with mizuhiki imagery and explanatory text, inner versus outer noshi selection, and name inscription. The customer flow is three steps: occasion, heading, placement. Also covers wrapping paper, paper bags, and message cards, with per-option pricing. Uses Shopify Functions cart transforms.
On expressiveness of noshi specifically, this is the most complete implementation we could verify. It is also roughly six months old with a single review, so the buying decision rests on your own trial-period testing.
All in gift
Huckleberry, Setagaya, Tokyo. Launched November 2, 2021. Rated 4.9 across 129 reviews. Japanese only.
Four tiers, all with 14-day trials: standard gifting $9.90/month, e-gift $9.90/month plus a 3% e-gift transaction fee, standard gifting PRO $49/month, e-gift PRO $49/month plus the same 3%. PRO adds split shipping, delivery date and time, and per-product gift option configuration.
Beyond noshi, wrapping, gift cards, and paper bags, it handles social gifting via shareable URLs, recipient address anonymization, catalogue gifts, and multi-ship. Its integration list includes Openlogi, Shippinno, Next Engine, and Logiless — the Japanese fulfillment and order-management stack. Checkout integration is listed.
If e-gift is a large share of revenue, that 3% will matter more than the subscription.
Gift Options Plus
Dryworks, Ebisu, Tokyo. Launched May 10, 2021. Rated 4.3 across 8 reviews. Japanese and English.
STARTER $3.99/month (1 widget), STANDARD $7.99/month (up to 5), PREMIUM $9.99/month (up to 10), all with 7-day trials. Pricing scales on widget count — an unusual axis. A widget is a placement: product page, cart, or checkout.
Covers noshi, wrapping, and message cards, and lets you toggle cart presentation between "separate" (its own line) and "bundle" (merged into one line). Per-product targeting, automatic order tagging, and order note integration are listed. Uses Shopify Functions cart transforms.
The separate/bundle toggle doesn't appear in any other listing we checked. It matters when you don't want wrapping charges shown as their own cart line.
Simple Noshi App
UnReact, Fukuoka. Launched February 8, 2024. $6.99/month or $69.99/year, 7-day trial, Japanese only. Free indefinitely on development stores.
Adds noshi selection on the cart page, with ceremonial types provided out of the box. Types and prices are configurable and new types can be added. As the name suggests, the scope is narrow — no wrapping paper, no paper bags.
Zero reviews as of September 1, 2026. There is no track record to weigh.
PAL ‑ Gift Wrap, Gift Note
Shree Balajee Technologies, New Delhi. Launched April 2, 2025. Built for Shopify badge. Lists Japanese among supported languages.
Starter is free for 5 gift orders per month, including per-product wrap control, order tags and notes, all-page support, paid and free wraps, image previews, and messages. Growth $5/month (or $50/year) raises it to 50 orders; Scale $9.99/month (or $99.99/year) removes the cap. Paid tiers carry 7-day trials.
The only non-Japanese app here that lists a Japanese UI. It has no noshi-specific interface, though — you can put the word "noshi" in an option label, but the etiquette logic is yours to construct. Checkout, cart drawer, cart page, and product page placements are listed.
The three Western apps
Wrapin ‑ Gift Wrap & Options (Prezen Apps): 4.9 across 355 reviews, Built for Shopify. Three paid tiers at $3.99 / $5.99 / $7.99, with the Pro tier adding multiple gift options and multi-language translation. Integrations list Shopify Admin only — no checkout integration listed.
Giftship: Gift, Bundle & Ship (Gist): 4.8 across 245 reviews. Essential $59.99/month ($0.10 per order above 500), Plus $149.99/month, Enterprise $399.99/month. The listing states "checkout options (Shopify Plus)" — checkout display is Plus-gated.
Gift Wrap Plus (Nulls.Net): 4.9 across 64 reviews, launched December 6, 2016. Small free (5 gift orders, 1 gift product), Medium $3.99 (20), Large $8.99 (70), X-Large $19.99 (150). Tiers are gated on gift order count — worth confirming what happens when you hit the ceiling.
One app to strike from your list
"Noshi Option" (developer yojiro / bluestyle.jp) now shows "This app is not currently available on the Shopify App Store." It cannot be installed. It still surfaces in search results and in older comparison articles, so don't shortlist it.
Pre-install checklist
- Have you specified the noshi requirement concretely? How many occasion headings, is inner/outer selection mandatory, is name inscription needed?
- Is wrapping applied per item or per order? This determines the native mechanism (line item properties versus cart attributes) and narrows the app list
- Are you charging for wrapping or noshi? If so, native features alone cannot express it
- Do customers need to choose during checkout? If yes, Shopify Plus is a prerequisite
- Which languages do the admin and storefront need? Three of the four Japanese apps are Japanese-only
- Pricing is in USD across the board. Exchange rate moves hit the subscription directly
- Do you need warehouse or order-management integration? Only All in gift lists Openlogi and Next Engine
- Do you need prices hidden on packing slips? That's Shopify packing slip template territory, not necessarily an app feature
- How does each app render into cart and checkout, and what happens when you change themes?
Bottom line
Four steps, in order:
- Pin down the etiquette requirements first. Heading count, inner/outer, name inscription. Compare apps before that and every one of them will look like it could work
- If noshi is required, your field is four Japanese-built apps. Western gift wrap apps don't model the concepts
- Decide whether checkout-stage selection is necessary. If it is, Shopify Plus enters the cost structure
- During the trial, run a real order all the way through to the packing slip. How the noshi choice lands in the order record, and whether the warehouse can read it during picking and packing, is not something a feature list will tell you
App Store pricing, ratings, and badges change, and review counts in particular vary by when the page is fetched. Everything here reflects listings as of September 1, 2026 — verify on each app's page before installing.
Shopify's admin address validation is on by default, free, on every plan, and supports the US. Checkout-time validation is one toggle away. Shopify's own documentation then warns that running a third-party address validation app at the same time can create conflicting suggestions and reduce checkout conversion — you are meant to pick one. That reframes the whole category: apps are not there to duplicate deliverability checking, they are there to enforce policy Shopify's validator does not enforce, like blocking PO boxes or requiring an apartment number. We priced four real apps from the US App Store on September 2, 2026, spanning $4.99/month flat, $0.04 per order, and one that requires a separate subscription billed outside Shopify.
