"Shopify has a return feature built into its standard offering," and "returning items requires an app" are both descriptions that appear in search results.
Both statements are correct. Shopify offers a free standard feature for return policies and self-service returns, and some stores operate solely on this feature. However, the standard feature has several boundaries outlined in the official documentation, one of which is impossible to overcome for Japanese stores.
This article redefines the boundaries of the standard feature based on the official documentation and compares six representative apps from the 232 available in the Shopify App Store. The research was conducted on September 1, 2026.
Conclusion First
For those looking to make a quick decision, here are the conclusions based on the conditions:
- Stores with a few return requests per month and a fixed domestic return address can use the standard feature. Setting up return rules and automated response emails takes about an hour, and there is no monthly cost.
- Stores that want to incorporate return reasons analysis and tracking into their operations need an app. The standard feature lacks tracking for returned items and a dashboard to analyze return data.
- Stores that want to display a return portal in Japanese have only one viable option: Yanet Returns & Exchanges. Major international return apps do not list Japanese as a supported language.
- Stores that want customers to request exchanges on their own cannot do so with the standard feature. This is a clear specification.
What Does Shopify's Standard Feature Cover?
Shopify's standard return feature covers three main areas.
The first is return rules, found under "Settings" → "Policies" in the Shopify admin. Here, you can set the return acceptance period, who pays for return shipping, and the return fee percentage.
The return acceptance period can be set to 14 days, 30 days, 90 days, unlimited, or a custom number of days. You can also choose the starting point, either "Delivery date of the item" or "Delivery date of the last item in the order." For stores with many multi-ship orders, the difference in starting points can significantly affect the number of inquiries.
For return shipping costs, you have three options: free, a flat fee per return, or requiring customers to purchase their own shipping labels. The return fee is a percentage of the return amount.
The second area is self-service returns and cancellations. Enabling this in "Settings" → "Customer Accounts" allows customers to request returns and cancellations from their account pages. The store receives notifications, and you can approve or reject these requests in the admin.
The third area is manual returns and exchanges created from order details. You can create a return and add an exchange item from the "Returns" button.
All of these are free and available on any Shopify plan.
Six Boundaries of the Standard Feature
The problem lies in the constraints not covered in the official documentation but mentioned in the Japanese language articles.
1. Return labels can only be generated if both the shipping origin and destination are in the U.S.
The return creation page has a "Return Shipping Options" section with three choices. According to the Shopify Help Center, one of these options, "Create a return label with Shopify," has the following condition:
This option is only available if your primary location and the customer's shipping address are both within the U.S.
Thus, for stores with a location in Japan, this option is not available. The remaining options are "Upload a return label" or "No shipping."
Choosing "Upload a return label" allows you to register a PDF, PNG, or JPEG file or a label URL, and you can also enter tracking numbers and shipping companies. However, the label itself must be created outside of Shopify, such as using Yamato Transport or SMC Express's shipping label issuance system.
The reason why articles abroad say "Shopify can automatically generate return labels" while Japanese articles do not mention this is because of this regional limitation.
2. Customers cannot request exchanges
The self-service return documentation states:
In self-service returns, customers cannot request exchanges, and you cannot set up separate exchange return rules.
The only options on the customer-facing page are "Return" and "Cancel." Exchanges can only be added to the order after the return request is approved in the admin.
If you want to create an exchange portal where customers can choose their own replacement items, this is a clear reason to consider an app. Many return apps prominently feature exchange functionality because the standard feature lacks this.
3. Return fees are not automatically deducted from refunds
Even if you set return and shipping fees in the return rules, these fees are not automatically deducted from the refund. The Help Center is clear about this:
Return fees are not automatically deducted from refunds. You must manually deduct the return fees when creating a refund.
While the customer-facing page shows an estimated refund amount including fees, the actual refund process is manual. This can lead to losses if there are many return requests and missed deductions.
4. Legacy customer accounts do not work
Self-service returns are based on Shopify's new customer accounts. The Help Center states:
Self-service returns and cancellations do not work with legacy customer accounts.
For customer logins, they use an email address and a 6-digit verification code, without a password. Stores that resist this can choose not to use the standard feature.
However, if you don't want to fully switch to customer accounts, you can still create an entry by posting the customer account URL on your footer or return policy page.
5. Granular Limits and Unsupported Combinations
Other constraints that can be found in the official documentation include:
- You can only handle up to 250 lines of order details in a single return request. If you exceed this, you must ask the customer to split the request.
- You cannot add custom items as exchange items.
- Inventory for exchange items is not reserved until the return is processed.
- You cannot add exchange items to orders with customs fees (returns are still possible).
- You cannot apply order-level discounts to exchange items (product discounts are allowed).
- You cannot set bundle items as non-returnable items (Final sale).
- You can only register non-returnable items at the product or collection level.
- Cancellation requests do not change the order status. You must approve or reject each one.
- Cancelling a subscription order does not cancel the subscription contract.
- Digital or personalized products are not automatically excluded from cancellation.
- Return request notifications cannot be received on the Shopify app (mobile).
- To use return rules with Shopify POS, you need Shopify POS Pro.
- The ability to set different return rules for each market is in early access for some stores only.
- Return and refund policy templates are only available in English.
- Changes to return rules apply only to future orders and do not affect existing orders.
6. EU Regulation Compliance Apps Dominate the Category
As of September 1, 2026, the "Returns & Exchanges" category on the Shopify App Store has 232 apps. Notably, the top two categories are "EU Withdrawal Button & Form" (4.9 rating, 2,220 reviews) and "Revoq – EU Withdrawal Button" (4.9 rating, 517 reviews), which are specialized apps for EU withdrawal rights.
The background is the EU directive 2023/2673. According to the Shopify Help Center, this directive came into effect on June 19, 2026, requiring businesses to provide an electronic means for consumers within the EU to exercise their 14-day withdrawal rights. Shopify suggests that by enabling self-service returns, setting the cancellation period to "before the item is shipped," and the return period to over 14 days with the starting point as "the delivery of the last item in the order," you can comply with the directive.
While this is not relevant to stores that only sell in Japan, it is a mistake to assume that apps with over 2,000 reviews are the go-to choice for return categories.
Comparison of Six Return Apps
This section compares six actual apps. All values are as of September 1, 2026, from the Shopify App Store listing pages.
| App Name | Rating (Reviews) | Built for Shopify | Japanese UI | Free Tier | Paid Plan Start | Billing Basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Return Prime: Return & Exchange | 4.8 (724) | No | No | 5 requests/month | $19.99/month (60 requests) | Monthly requests + overages $0.49/req |
| Yanet Returns & Exchanges | 4.8 (262) | Yes | Yes | 6 requests/month | $9.99/month (80 requests) | Monthly requests + overages $0.2/req |
| AfterShip Returns & Exchanges | 4.7 (1,393) | Yes | No | Return Care only | $19/month (20 requests) | Monthly returns + overages $0.5/req |
| ReturnGO Returns & Exchanges | 4.8 (359) | No | Unknown | N/A | $147/month (110 requests) | Monthly returns + overages $1.25/req |
| ExchangeIt Returns & Exchange | 5.0 (85) | Yes | Unknown | N/A | $4.99/month (10 requests) | Monthly returns (unlimited with $9.99 plan) |
| Recustomer | 0.0 (0) | No | Japanese only (English UI) | Free tier | Not listed | Not listed |
Insights from the Comparison Table
The billing basis for all six apps is based on monthly return requests. This is unusual compared to other app categories, where billing is often based on contact count for email apps or order count for loyalty apps. For return apps, the cost is per transaction, making the billing basis consistent across the board.
The key comparison points are the free tier and overage pricing. Return Prime offers 5 free requests per month, Yanet offers 6, and AfterShip's Essentials plan offers 20 free requests per month. For stores with single-digit monthly returns, Return Prime and Yanet are effectively free.
The same "unlimited" plans have significantly different price points. ExchangeIt offers unlimited returns for $9.99/month, while Yanet offers unlimited for $29.99/month. ReturnGO's Pro plan at $297/month caps at 300 returns, with an overage of $0.90 per return.
Only two apps offer a Japanese UI for customer-facing pages. Yanet lists 16 languages, including Japanese, while Recustomer is only in Japanese. Return Prime is in English, AfterShip offers English, German, French, Spanish, and Italian, and ReturnGO and ExchangeIt are in English only.
AfterShip's pricing is inconsistent between the App Store and their official pricing page. The App Store shows Essentials at $19/month for 20 returns, but their official pricing page shows $16/month for 240 returns annually. This makes direct comparison difficult, and it's important to clarify the billing basis before signing up.
Positioning of Each App
Yanet Returns & Exchanges
The first choice for stores needing a Japanese UI. Developed by Yanet in Vietnam, it was launched in April 2023 and has a Built for Shopify badge. The free plan allows up to 6 requests per month, with features like customizable return portal, unlimited return reasons, exchange for the same item and variation, refunds via store credit, email notifications, and integration with multiple carriers. The Professional plan at $9.99/month increases the free limit to 80 requests, adding different items and variations, delivery receipts, and conditional return fees. Overages are $0.2 per return, the lowest cost among the six apps.
Integration options include EasyPost, FedEx, and Shippo, none of which are Japanese carriers. For automated label issuance, additional means are required.
Return Prime: Return & Exchange
Developed by Appsdart Solutions Private Limited (Berlin), launched in October 2020, with a rating of 4.8 (724 reviews). It offers a free plan with 5 requests per month, including a branded return portal, variation exchanges, and unlimited return reasons. The Grow plan at $19.99/month adds automatic approval, refunds via store credit, and overages at $0.49 per return. The app only supports English.
AfterShip Returns & Exchanges
Launched in February 2017, it has the most reviews at 1,393. It has a Built for Shopify badge and mentions integration with Shopify POS and Flow. For stores wanting to link POS and returns, this is useful. The free Return Care plan is not a general free plan but a "buyers pay" model, where AfterShip handles the label and revenue sharing. The free plan does not match the expected usage.
ReturnGO Returns & Exchanges
The only app with a minimum cost of $147/month, offering no free plan or installation. The Premium plan supports two languages, and the Pro plan at $297/month has unlimited languages. However, it's unclear if Japanese is one of the selectable languages.
Suitable for stores with over 100 monthly returns and those needing advanced automation and ERP integration.
ExchangeIt Returns & Exchange
Launched in September 2015, rated 5.0 (85 reviews) with a Built for Shopify badge. The Starter plan at $4.99/month covers up to 10 returns, while the Standard plan at $9.99/month offers unlimited returns. The lowest overage cost among the six apps. However, there is no free plan, and only a 7-day trial is available. The vendor's footer mentions that the Starter plan is always free, but the App Store shows it at $4.99/month. This discrepancy must be checked before signing up.
Recustomer
The only Japanese app for returns, exchanges, and cancellations on the Shopify App Store. Developed by Recustomer Inc. (Tokyo), launched in December 2023, with a Japanese-only UI. However, it is not registered in the returns category, has no reviews, and only a single line for pricing. Features include tracking, automated returns and exchanges, automated cancellations, and try-before-you-buy. Consider it if Japanese support is crucial, but check the pricing and scope of services.
Case-by-Case Selection
Start Without Monthly Fees
First, set up the standard features. Decide on the return acceptance period, return shipping costs, return fees, and non-returnable items. Self-service returns are free. If monthly returns are under 5, no app is needed.
Show a Japanese Return Portal to Customers
Yanet Returns & Exchanges is a realistic choice. The free plan allows for a Japanese UI and portal customization, allowing you to gauge customer response before committing to a paid plan.
Allow Customers to Choose Their Size Exchanges
Standard features do not support this. Yanet offers same-item exchanges in the free plan and different items in the Professional plan. Return Prime offers variation exchanges from the free plan.
Exceeding 100 Monthly Returns
Overage costs are significant. For 150 returns, Yanet at $29.99 (unlimited) and ReturnGO's Premium at $147 + 40 overages at $1.25 = $197 results in a 6x difference. For stores not needing advanced automation or ERP integration, start with the cheaper options.
Must Have Japanese Support
Recustomer is the only domestic vendor, but pricing is not listed. Get a quote and compare with Yanet's monthly costs.
Pre-Installation Checklist
- Set up the standard return rules, including return acceptance period and start date.
- Decide on manual deduction of return fees from refunds if set.
- Confirm if customer accounts are transitioning to a new system (old systems may not support self-service returns).
- Decide on the method for issuing return labels outside of Shopify.
- Decide if you want to request exchanges from customers or handle them in-store.
- Compare your monthly return volume with each app's free tier and overage pricing.
- Ensure the language of the customer-facing pages meets your requirements.
- Confirm if you are using Shopify POS Pro for return handling.
- Verify that the app's pricing matches the App Store and vendor's official site.
- Decide on the process for canceling contracts for subscription items when returns or cancellations occur.
Summary
The decision process can be summarized into four steps:
- Start with standard features. Return rules and self-service returns are free. For stores with few returns, this is sufficient.
- Identify the unmovable boundaries. Japanese stores cannot issue return labels using standard features. If either of these is a requirement, consider the app.
- Compare free tiers and overage pricing. All return apps are billed monthly on return requests. The key comparison is which plan fits your monthly return volume.
- Narrow down by the language of the customer-facing pages. If Japanese UI is required, the choices are Yanet Returns & Exchanges and Recustomer.
Pricing and features may change. Before implementation, please verify the latest information on each app's Shopify App Store listing page.
Shopify's admin address validation is on by default, free, on every plan, and supports the US. Checkout-time validation is one toggle away. Shopify's own documentation then warns that running a third-party address validation app at the same time can create conflicting suggestions and reduce checkout conversion — you are meant to pick one. That reframes the whole category: apps are not there to duplicate deliverability checking, they are there to enforce policy Shopify's validator does not enforce, like blocking PO boxes or requiring an apartment number. We priced four real apps from the US App Store on September 2, 2026, spanning $4.99/month flat, $0.04 per order, and one that requires a separate subscription billed outside Shopify.
