What you will learn

The product reviews category of the Shopify App Store holds 436 apps as of August 31, 2026. Every listing promises a free start and unlimited review collection. Put the pricing pages side by side and the differences still don't surface.
What makes this hard isn't the apps. It's that Shopify's native review capability sits halfway between existing and not existing. Shopify does collect product reviews — but they appear inside the Shop app, not on your own storefront's product pages. Compare review apps without knowing that, and you end up paying monthly without ever establishing what you're paying them to replace.
This article draws the native boundary from Shopify's own documentation first, then checks four real apps' pricing pages to find where each free plan actually ends.
The short version
- You want reviews on your storefront product pages → you need an app. Shopify's native features won't do it
- You want to spend nothing → Judge.me Product Reviews App. Its free plan lists no cap on reviews or review requests
- You sell on visuals → Loox ‑ Product Reviews App. The free plan tops out at 500 orders, and the next tier jumps to $49.99/month
- You need a non-English admin → TrustWILL Reviews. Its free plan carries a "6 reviews per product" line
- You want reviews to show in the Shop app too → Judge.me, Loox, Okendo, Stamped.io or Yotpo. Only these five are officially supported for syncing
And if your store operates in a language other than English, there's one requirement further down that decides the question for you.
What Shopify does natively
Shop has real, native product reviews
Per the Shopify Help Center page "Shop product reviews," a customer who buys a product through the Shop app or your online store can leave a product review inside the Shop app. Once an order is delivered, the customer gets a push or in-app notification asking for one.
They can leave a 1-to-5 star rating and a comment of up to 1,000 characters. Reviews and average ratings are public and appear on the product detail page in the Shop app. Only Shop customers who purchased the product are permitted to submit a review.
This is free and requires no additional app.
But none of it reaches your storefront
Here's where it stops. Shop reviews live and die inside the Shop app. There is no native feature that puts star ratings or review text on your own Shopify product pages.
Checking the "Apps made by Shopify" list in the Help Center on August 31, 2026, no product reviews app appears on it.
So the moment you want reviews on a product page, a third-party app becomes mandatory. That's the part that falls squarely into "not possible natively."
Only five apps can sync with Shop
Shopify's "Syncing Shop product reviews with partner apps" names the supported partner apps explicitly:
- Judge.me
- Loox
- Okendo
- Stamped.io
- Yotpo
Use one of these five and you can push app-collected reviews into the Shop app, and pull Shop-collected reviews onto your storefront. Shop-collected reviews shown on your store carry a Verified by Shop badge, and that badge can't be removed.
Two eligibility rules worth reading before you choose
The same page lists eligibility requirements for displaying partner-app reviews on Shop. Two of them are decisive.
First, a review that includes a non-English language code won't display on Shop. If you collect reviews in Japanese, German or Spanish and want them surfaced in the Shop app, this requirement is the wall.
Second, reviews migrated between review apps via CSV, or uploaded to your store from a CSV, aren't eligible to display on Shop. Most app-to-app migration paths run through CSV. Switch apps and your review history may become permanently ineligible for Shop.
Shopify also notes that reviews collected through a partner app must be managed inside that same app, and that you need to transfer everything before uninstalling the current one. What survives an uninstall and what doesn't is covered in the Shopify app cleanup guide.
Four apps, one set of criteria
All figures below are as displayed on the Shopify App Store on August 31, 2026.
| Criterion | Judge.me Product Reviews App | Loox ‑ Product Reviews App | TrustWILL Reviews | Yotpo: Product Reviews App |

Three things fall out of this table.
First, "free plan available" means four different things here. Judge.me lists no cap on reviews or review requests. Loox, TrustWILL and Yotpo each stop on a different axis — cumulative orders, reviews shown per product, and monthly orders respectively. Which axis your store hits first determines your real monthly cost.
Second, cost grows for different reasons. Judge.me and TrustWILL don't change price as orders grow. Loox and Yotpo do. On Loox, the Convert plan includes 300 orders at $49.99 and adds $50 per additional 300. The gap widens as you scale. How app charges actually surface on your invoice is covered in why Shopify app costs don't match the estimate.
Third, the badge on the listing isn't the same as the app's actual behaviour. Three of the four carry Built for Shopify; Yotpo does not. That badge covers performance, design and integration standards — worth weighing if store speed is a concern.
App by app
Judge.me Product Reviews App
Best when: you want a fixed cost and don't want to think about review volume.
The free "Forever Free" plan covers unlimited review and review-request collection, unlimited photo and video reviews, review widgets and star rating badges, carousels and a UGC media grid, SEO rich snippets, review distribution to the Shop app, and importers from other apps. Since no volume cap is listed, the plan keeps working as orders grow.
The paid "Awesome" plan is a flat $15/month with a 15-day free trial, adding 100+ integrations, Q&A, A/B testing, full widget and email customization, Google Shopping syndication, an SEO review page, and AI replies. It carries the Built for Shopify badge and won a 2025 Build Award.
Watch for: the listing includes 15 supported languages. One merchant review dated July 23, 2026 notes that the menus are basically English and take getting used to. A single review isn't a general finding, but it's worth checking the admin yourself during the trial if a localized interface matters.
Loox ‑ Product Reviews App
Best when: photo and video reviews are the selling point — apparel, beauty, home.
The free "Beginner" plan includes review request emails and reminders, discounts for photo reviews, 17+ widgets, Google rich snippets and schema, conversion of reviews into social posts, Shop app sync, and 24/7 chat and email support. The listing states a ceiling of up to 500 orders.
"Convert" is $49.99/month with 300 orders included and $50 per additional 300, adding AI sorting, summaries, translation and replies, video reviews, referrals, syncing to Google, Meta and TikTok, and API and webhook access. It has a 14-day trial; "Unlimited" sits at $299.99/month.
Watch for: one one-star review dated August 18, 2026 reports being charged $399.99 on the $49.99 plan, and suggests marketplace orders from Amazon and Mercado Libre were counted as billable orders. The developer replied that they had reached out privately. One review isn't a pattern, but if you sell through marketplaces alongside your Shopify store, confirm what counts as an "order" before installing.
TrustWILL Reviews
Best when: you need a localized admin and widgets that your operations team can pick up without English.
Formally listed as 商品レビュー(日本限定) TrustWILL Reviews, developed by CWILL — previously Channelwill's "Trustoo." It advertises a localized admin page, localized widgets, automatic comment translation, and AI review summaries, and carries the Built for Shopify badge with a 4.9 rating across 1,501 reviews. Twenty languages are listed.
The free plan is where to look closely. Its description says "Unlimited product and store reviews" while the same plan also lists "6 reviews per product." The listing alone doesn't settle which governs, but the $11.99 "Starter" plan lists "Show unlimited reviews" as one of its additions — which reads as a per-product display cap on the free tier. Verify it on a live product page during the trial.
Starter adds Google snippets, one-language auto-translation, unlimited review display and review replies. The $29.99 "Growth" plan adds video reviews, Google Shopping, product grouping, multi-language translation, integrations and API access. Annual billing saves 20%; the trial is 7 days.
Two further constraints. This app does not appear on Shopify's list of partner apps supported for Shop review sync, so Shop-side display can't be confirmed from official sources. And its App Store data access section requests sensitive customer data — name, email, phone, address — plus 60 days of order history and theme edit permissions.
One one-star review dated June 23, 2026 reports being unable to attach images to reviews from iOS; the developer replied that a fix had shipped.
Yotpo: Product Reviews App
Best when: reviews are one component of a wider stack that also includes loyalty and SMS.
The free plan covers up to 50 monthly orders with automatic review requests, an email template library, sentiment and profanity checks, and on-site display. "Starter" from $15/month adds photo and video collection, Google rich snippets, Google Shopping Ads and a review carousel; "Pro" from $119/month adds Google Seller Rating, AI review summaries and smart sorting. Both scale with order volume.
Three things to note. The pricing section states that Yotpo may bill you externally, separate from your Shopify invoice — so the Shopify bill alone won't show your full spend. Manual resending of review request emails isn't available on the free plan; Yotpo confirmed this in a public reply dated July 9, 2026, describing it as a paid-plan feature. And of the four apps compared here, this is the only one without the Built for Shopify badge.
Picking by situation
Spend nothing. Judge.me. With no volume cap listed on the free plan, it's the only one of these four that stays free as orders grow. Check the admin language during the trial.
Localized admin above all. TrustWILL Reviews, budgeting from the $11.99 Starter plan rather than the free tier, and only if Shop app sync isn't a requirement.
Sell on photos and video. Loox. The free plan runs to 500 orders; after that it's $49.99/month and up, in English only.
Still undecided. Turn on Shop's native reviews and watch what accumulates. They won't appear on your product pages, but it costs nothing and you can add an app later.
Pre-install checklist
- Do reviews need to appear on your storefront product pages, or is the Shop app enough?
- Is the free plan capped on review count, order count, or reviews displayed per product?
- Apply your monthly order volume to that cap — how many months until you're paying?
- Flat fee or usage-based? If usage-based, what exactly counts as one "order"?
- Does the admin language and the developer's support language match your team's? These are separate listing fields
- Do you want reviews in the Shop app? If so, the field narrows to the five officially supported apps
- Do you collect reviews in a language other than English? Those reviews aren't eligible for display on Shop
- If you switch apps later, in what format can reviews be exported? CSV-migrated reviews can't display on Shop
- Can you finish verifying display on a real product page inside the trial window?
In summary
Four things decide this.
- If reviews need to be on your product pages, an app is mandatory. Shopify's native capability is confined to the Shop app
- Read "free plan available" down to the type of cap. Unlimited reviews, an order ceiling, and a per-product display limit produce very different bills
- Treat interface language and support language as separate fields. They are listed separately for a reason
- Price the exit before the entry. Reviews are held inside the app, and CSV-migrated reviews can't be shown on Shop
The next concrete step is to write down your monthly order volume and hold it against all four free-plan ceilings. Whichever one you hit first is setting your real monthly cost.
Pricing, features and review counts here reflect the Shopify App Store and each vendor's official information as of August 31, 2026. Review app pricing changes; confirm on the current pricing page before installing.
Shopify only counts a checkout as abandoned once a shopper enters contact info and stalls for ten minutes. That excludes every cart-only exit, every POS and Shop app checkout, and anything older than three months. Plus the conditions that silently block delivery, the opt-in you cannot undo, and how three recovery apps bill on three different units. Researched August 31, 2026.
