Shopify Upsells Do Not Always Require Plus | Nine Conditions That Block Post-Purchase Offers

Shopify Plus is required only for upsells in the Information, Shipping, and Payment steps. Post-purchase upsells work from Basic upward, but nine conditions—including Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, installment plans, and multi-currency orders—can prevent offers from appearing. This article maps those limits and compares three apps. Researched September 1, 2026.

The statement that "Shopify Upsell requires Plus" is only partially correct and can lead to significant misunderstandings in practical use.

Plus is required only for the three checkout steps of Information, Shipping, and Payment where app blocks are inserted. Post-purchase upsells, which appear after the purchase is completed, can be used from the Basic plan. However, certain payment methods are not supported for post-purchase upsells, and customers who pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, Klarna, Affirm, or AfterPay will not see the upsell page.

This article consolidates the plan requirements and display conditions based on the Shopify Help Center and shopify.dev documentation, and compares three upsell apps. The research was conducted on September 1, 2026.

Conclusion

Stores on Basic, Grow, and Advanced plans can display upsells on the product page, cart, thank you page, order status page, and post-purchase upsell. Only the three checkout steps are restricted to Plus.

Stores that primarily use post-purchase upsells should check the payment methods used. Post-purchase upsells will not appear for orders paid with Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, Klarna, Affirm, or AfterPay. Stores with a high rate of wallet payments will have a smaller target audience.

For cost savings, Upsell & Cross Sell — Selleasy is the only app that offers a permanent free tier (up to 50 orders) for live stores.

For Japanese UI, only Candy Rack • Upsell Cross-sell is available.

For combining discounts, check if the old checkout (checkout.liquid) customization is still in place. Certain combinations are not possible if it is.

Where Can You Display Upsells, Plan by Plan

The Shopify Help Center provides a table showing where checkout customizations are possible by plan. Here are the relevant parts:

App Extension TypeBasic and AboveShopify Plus
Post-Purchase App ExtensionsAvailableAvailable
Thank You and Order Status Page UI ExtensionsAvailableAvailable
Customer Account Page UI Extensions (all pages)AvailableAvailable
Information, Shipping, and Payment Pages UI ExtensionsNot AvailableAvailable
Public Apps Using Shopify FunctionsAvailableAvailable
Custom Apps Using Shopify FunctionsNot AvailableAvailable
Checkout Branding APINot AvailableAvailable

The Help Center states, "Standard checkout customizations are available on all pages for plans above Basic. Advanced checkout customizations are only available on Shopify Plus plans."

Thus, "Plus is required for upsell apps" is not entirely accurate. It is only required for the three checkout steps.

Another important limit is that up to three apps can be placed in the same highlight area. The shopify.dev documentation also states, "Merchants can add up to three extensions to the same block target position." Using multiple upsell apps can hit this limit.

Nine Conditions for Post-Purchase Upsells Not to Be Displayed

Post-purchase upsells are a one-screen mechanism that appears after the checkout is completed but before the order confirmation page. While effective, the shopify.dev documentation lists several specific conditions.

1. Still in Beta, Requires Approval for Live Use

The documentation explicitly states that "Post-purchase checkout extensions are in beta." While they can be used in development stores, approval is required for live use.

2. Maximum of 3 Offers Per Checkout

The documentation states that "Customers can accept a maximum of 3 post-purchase offers per checkout."

3. Only One Post-Purchase Page Can Be Created

The documentation states, "Only one post-purchase page can be created." Multiple pages can be shown using pagination within a single page.

4. Only One Post-Purchase Function Can Be Used at a Time

The Shopify Help Center states, "Only one checkout app that adds post-purchase functionality can be used at a time." If multiple are installed, choose one in the "Post-Purchase Page" section of the settings.

5. Not Displayed for Wallet Payments and Installments

This is the most impactful restriction in practice. The documentation states that post-purchase pages are not displayed for checkouts using installment plans or wallet services, such as Klarna, Affirm, AfterPay, Apple Pay, Amazon Pay, and Google Pay.

6. Not Displayed for Payment Providers That Require CVN/CVV Storage

Third-party payment providers that require CVN/CVV storage are not supported. Examples include Braintree, Payflow Pro, PayPal Payments Pro, and Eway.

7. Not Displayed for Orders with Duties, Multiple Currencies, or Local Delivery

Orders with duties, multiple currencies, or local delivery are not supported. This condition narrows the eligible orders for stores that handle cross-border sales.

8. Minimum Order Value of $0.50, and Only for Online Store Sales

Post-purchase upsells are not displayed for orders with a value of less than $0.50 or for orders not made through the online store.

9. Tracking Is Inaccurate

This is more of a side effect than a strict limitation, but it still has an impact. The documentation states that external analytics (Google Analytics, Facebook, Pinterest, Snap) using the Shopify Pixel API only record the first purchase event and its value. Script tags or additional scripts only fire on the order status page, leading to incomplete conversion data.

The sales generated from post-purchase upsells may not be reflected in the ad platform's ROAS.

Additional Important Specifications

During the post-purchase flow, fulfillment holds are applied to all orders. The hold is released when the customer visits the order status page or, if they haven't, one hour after the first checkout submission. This one-hour period can be significant for stores that need to expedite shipping.

Limits for Combining Discounts

Since upsell strategies often involve discounts, it's important to know the limits. The Shopify Help Center provides numerical limits.

Automatic discounts can be enabled on the store as a whole for a maximum of 25. This includes discounts from apps. And, "up to 25 automatic discounts can be applied to a single order."

Discount codes can be used for a maximum of 5 product discounts and 1 shipping discount code per order.

The following combinations are also limited:

CombinationAllowed
Order Discount + Free ShippingAll merchants
Product Discount + Free ShippingAll merchants
Product Discount + Discount on Another ProductAll merchants
Product Discount + Order DiscountOnly certain merchants
Order Discount + Order DiscountOnly certain merchants
Product Discount + Product Discount on the Same ProductOnly Shopify Plus merchants
Shipping Discount + Shipping DiscountNot allowed

The conditions for "certain merchants" are important. The Help Center lists two conditions: "The store must not have customizations or features of checkout.liquid" and "The store must not be using the Licensify app."

Thus, if the old checkout has any customizations, "product discount + order discount" and "order discount + order discount" combinations are not allowed. The design of upsell discounts can be directly constrained by the residual assets of the old checkout.

Note that discount combinations do not function on other channels (Facebook, Instagram, Google, etc.), only on the online store, Storefront API, and Shopify POS.

Additionally, Buy X get Y is not available on any plan except Plus, and the target product is excluded from additional product discounts. Designing a "buy two, get one free" offer with an additional coupon is not possible on any plan except Plus.

Script Tags Have Been Sunset on Every Store

As of September 1, 2026, the script tag method has ended for all stores. The old method of "posting scripts on the thank you page to upsell" is no longer usable.

Comparison of Three Upsell Apps

At the time of writing, the Shopify App Store category "Upsell and Cross-sell" contains 1,076 apps. Here, we compare the top three based on the number of reviews.

App NameRating (Reviews)Built for ShopifyJapanese UIBilling UnitFree Tier for Live StoreStarting Fee
Upsell.com - ReConvert Upsell4.8 (2,806)NoNoMonthly orders or upsell salesNo (only free for development stores)$4.99/month
Candy Rack • Upsell Cross-sell4.9 (223)YesYesMonthly online store orders of the storeNo (only free for trial and development stores)$29.99/month
Upsell & Cross Sell — Selleasy4.9 (2,537)YesNoTotal orders of the storeUp to 50 orders per month$9/month

Insights from the Comparison Table

The billing units are different for all three apps. This is the biggest reason why comparisons in this category are difficult.

Upsell.com - ReConvert Upsell is a two-axis model. The pricing plans for each landing page are explicitly stated as "monthly orders or upsell sales increase, so the cost increases." The Upsell Basic plan ($4.99/month) covers "up to 50 monthly orders or $50 in upsell sales," the Upsell Growth plan ($9.99/month) covers "up to 100 monthly orders or $100 in upsell sales," and the Upsell Business plan ($19.99/month) covers "up to 200 monthly orders or $200 in upsell sales." The design is such that the cost increases even if the number of orders is low as long as the upsell is successful.

Candy Rack • Upsell Cross-sell is based solely on the store's monthly online store orders. The Lite plan ($29.99/month) covers 0 to 50 orders, the Starter plan ($39.99/month) covers 51 to 200 orders, and the Growth plan ($59.99/month) covers 201 to 500 orders. Each plan explicitly states that "upsell orders and sales are unlimited," which is the opposite of ReConvert. The cost does not increase even if the upsell is successful.

Upsell & Cross Sell — Selleasy is based on the total number of orders of the store. All four plans state that "the total number of orders of the store is considered." Note that it is not based on orders made through the app. The Starter Tier I (free) covers up to 50 orders per month, Tier II ($9/month) covers up to 500 orders, Tier III ($19/month) covers up to 1,000 orders, and Tier IV ($29/month) covers over 1,000 orders.

Only Selleasy offers a permanent free tier for live stores. The free plan for ReConvert is explicitly stated as "for development stores only," and the free plan for Candy Rack is "for trial and development stores only." Among the three, only Selleasy states that "charges apply only if the total number of orders exceeds 50."

The cost can vary significantly even if the monthly order count is the same. For a store with 100 monthly orders, Selleasy costs $9, ReConvert is equivalent to the Upsell Growth plan at $9.99, and Candy Rack is at the Starter plan at $39.99. For a store with 500 monthly orders, Selleasy remains at $9, and Candy Rack is at $59.99.

Only Candy Rack and Selleasy have the "Built for Shopify" badge. The app with the highest number of reviews, ReConvert, does not have this badge.

Only Candy Rack has a Japanese UI. Among the apps, only Candy Rack's listing page includes Japanese as one of the supported languages, while ReConvert and Selleasy do not. Candy Rack is developed by Digismoothie in the Czech Republic, and their listing page states "developed in the EU, no sensitive data is collected, fully GDPR compliant."

All three apps have "Works with: Checkout" noted. However, this alone does not distinguish whether the app block is for the checkout itself or the thank you page. ReConvert explicitly states in their description "checkout upsell (Shopify Plus only)." You need to check the app documentation to confirm if the block is for the checkout itself.

Current Status of Apps Often Mentioned in Japanese Comparisons

In Cart Upsell (ICU), which is frequently mentioned in Japanese comparisons, is not available on the Shopify App Store as of September 1, 2026. You cannot confirm the rating, review count, pricing, or release date from the listing page. It is currently not an option for adoption.

Case-by-Case Selection

For Stores with Monthly Orders Below 50

The free tier of Upsell & Cross Sell — Selleasy is sufficient. It includes free upsell on product pages, cart, post-purchase, and up to 50 AI recommendations.

To Keep the Cost Fixed Even if the Upsell Performance Improves

Candy Rack • Upsell Cross-sell is the right choice. The cost is based solely on the store's order count, and it explicitly states that upsell orders and sales are unlimited. ReConvert increases the cost as upsell sales increase, which is the opposite.

To Use a Japanese UI

Candy Rack • Upsell Cross-sell is the only option. However, the minimum cost is $29.99/month, which is the highest among the three.

To Have a High Ratio of Wallet Payments

Focus on placements other than post-purchase upsell. Since purchase pages, cart, and thank you pages do not show the post-purchase page for wallet payments, the coverage is broader.

To Show Upsell on the Checkout Page

Shopify Plus is required. For other plans, you cannot draw the app block at that position.

Pre-Installation Checklist

  1. Verify the breakdown of your store's payment methods (wallet payments determine the target range for post-purchase upsell).
  2. If using post-purchase upsell, be aware that an access request is required for live use.
  3. Confirm that fulfillment holds (up to 1 hour) in the post-purchase flow do not affect your shipping operations.
  4. Ensure that post-purchase upsell sales are reflected in your internal evaluation metrics.
  5. Confirm the number of active automatic discounts (a maximum of 25, including those from apps).
  6. Ensure that checkout.liquid customizations are not present (otherwise, certain discount combinations will not work).
  7. Confirm the billing unit is either "sales through the app" or "total store orders."
  8. Confirm whether the free tier is available for live stores or only for development stores.
  9. Ensure that you do not place more than three apps in the same location.
  10. Confirm that the UI is in a language that the setting team can use.

Summary

The order of decision-making is as follows:

  1. Accurately determine the scope that requires Plus. Only the Information, Shipping, and Payment steps are Plus-only. Upsell and Cross-sell can be used from the Basic plan.
  2. Post-purchase upsell is limited by payment methods. It does not appear for wallet payments or split payments. Before planning, check your store's payment breakdown.
  3. Compare the billing units. ReConvert is based on orders and upsell sales, Candy Rack is based on store orders, and Selleasy is based on total store orders. The cost can be four times higher even with the same monthly order count.
  4. Confirm the upper limits for discounts. Automatic discounts are limited to 25, and discount codes are limited to 5 per order. Customizations of the old checkout may prevent certain discount combinations from working.

Pricing and features may change. Before installation, check the latest information on each app's Shopify App Store listing page.

RelatedShopify Discounts Only Stack Six Ways — And Two of Them Require You to Have Left checkout.liquid Behind

Shopify sorts every discount into product, order, or shipping classes, and only six combinations exist. Two are limited to eligible merchants — eligibility means no checkout.liquid customizations and not running one specific named app. One is Plus-only. Add the hard caps: 25 active automatic discounts, 5 product/order codes plus 1 shipping code per order. Plus how two leading discount apps meter on completely different units.
