Shopify Validates Addresses for Free — and Tells You Not to Run an App Alongside It

Shopify's admin address validation is on by default, free, on every plan, and supports the US. Checkout-time validation is one toggle away. Shopify's own documentation then warns that running a third-party address validation app at the same time can create conflicting suggestions and reduce checkout conversion — you are meant to pick one. That reframes the whole category: apps are not there to duplicate deliverability checking, they are there to enforce policy Shopify's validator does not enforce, like blocking PO boxes or requiring an apartment number. We priced four real apps from the US App Store on September 2, 2026, spanning $4.99/month flat, $0.04 per order, and one that requires a separate subscription billed outside Shopify.

Shopify Has No Donation Feature — and "100% Goes to the Charity" Means Three Different Things

Shopify has no native way to collect a customer donation or a round-up at checkout. The closest built-in feature is Tipping, and Shopify's own help center suggests relabeling it "Donations" — but tipping caps at $1,000, breaks with Shop Pay Installments, isn't supported by the Subscription API, and has no charity, no disbursement, and no receipt. So merchants install an app, and that is where the real decision hides. We read the terms and help centers of five donation apps on September 2, 2026 and found three incompatible answers to one question: who is the donor of record. ShoppingGives issues the donation receipt to the merchant, Pledgeling Foundation emails it to the shopper, and DailyKarma tells shoppers they will not get a charity receipt at all. The fee models differ just as sharply — on $1,000 of monthly donations, the charity receives $1,000, $841, or $870 depending on which app you picked.

Shopify's Local Delivery Vanishes the Moment a Customer Taps Apple Pay

Shopify ships local delivery and pickup in store for free, and most merchants never read the limits. Local delivery is not offered to anyone who starts checkout with Apple Pay, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, or PayPal — only Shop Pay survives. The Out for delivery and Delivered emails never fire, because they are triggered by carrier tracking events and local delivery generates none. Customers can't mix shipped and locally delivered items in one order. Mixing shipped and pickup items is possible, but it's a Plus and Enterprise feature test drive that doesn't reach all of Plus until July 1, 2027 — and Shopify's pickup page describes it as though it already works for everyone. Plus the hard caps: 100 miles, 10 zones, 3 conditional price rules, 3,000 characters. Five real scheduling apps compared, metering five different things. Researched September 2, 2026.

Print-on-Demand Apps for Shopify: The Five Cost Variables That Decide Your Margin

Shopify has no native print-on-demand, so every POD app is a separate supplier with its own cost stack. Researched September 2, 2026 on the English Shopify App Store: the same Bella+Canvas 3001, US-fulfilled and sold at $28, lands at $15.73 through Printify's free plan, $16.00 through Printful's, $16.46 on CustomCat Lite and $13.66 on CustomCat Pro — a 10-point margin swing on one identical shirt. CustomCat Pro at $30/month pays for itself at 11 shirts a month; Printify Premium at $39/month needs $118.18 of monthly product spend before its "up to 33%" discount breaks even. Gooten publishes no base costs at all without an account. Includes verbatim reprint and returns policies, US facility counts, and the sales-tax line most margin spreadsheets omit.

Shopify's Quantity Price Breaks Are B2B-Only — and the Apps Bill You on Three Different Denominators

Shopify does have native volume pricing, but it lives inside B2B catalogs and it qualifies per variant — a customer ordering 10 blue and 10 gray hats hits neither 20-unit break. There is no native quantity break for DTC at all, and Buy X get Y never auto-adds the discounted item to the cart. We priced five real volume discount apps from the US App Store on September 2, 2026 and found they meter on three incompatible denominators: your store's total order count, revenue the app claims it generated, and a flat fee. The denominator, not the sticker price, decides which app is cheapest for you — and it can invert the ranking completely between a 40-order store and a 1,200-order store.
