Create or edit an article
The article editor is divided into the body on the left and article settings on the right. On a narrow screen, the settings appear below the body.
The article editor does not save automatically. Nothing is sent to Shopify until you select Save. If you leave the screen or close the browser first, your changes are lost. Save several times while writing a long article.
Enter the article title
Use a title that immediately communicates the subject. “A lightweight bag for rainy days” is clearer than “About our new product.”
Write the body
Write in the body field and break long text into paragraphs every two to four sentences. Use headings to move from the reader's question, to the detailed explanation, to how to choose or use the product, and finally to the next useful product or page. See Add content to an article for images, products, and other blocks.
Useful body-field controls
The character count appears above the body field, next to a button that expands the body to the full width of the screen. Selecting text brings up a small formatting toolbar.
Set a thumbnail
Add an image under Article Thumbnail. Choose a wide image that clearly represents the content and avoid tiny text inside it. Thumbnails must be under 4MB; reduce the image size if a larger file is rejected.
Choose an author
Select the person who wrote or is responsible for the article. If the author is missing, use Create New Author. It opens in a new tab; reload the editor after adding the author.
Add tags
Tags organize articles by subject, such as “Gifts,” “Care,” or “Staff.” Type a value and press Enter, or separate several values with commas. Existing tags appear as suggestions and an added tag can be removed with ×. Decide on consistent wording instead of creating multiple tags with the same meaning.
Choose the blog and theme template
Choose the Shopify blog where the article will be saved. Create New Blog opens Shopify admin in a new tab. Under Online Store, choose the article template from the published theme. When unsure, use your usual blog and Default Blog Post.
Check the search result appearance
The Search engine listing card below the body shows how the article can appear in search results:
- SEO Title: the title intended for search results. Left empty, the article title is used
- SEO Description: a short summary of the article
- URL Handle: the final part of the article URL, shown in full below the field
Keep the handle short and avoid changing it after sharing the article URL.
Save
Select Save at the top right. When there are unsaved changes, a save bar also appears at the top of the screen, where you can save or discard them. Saving is only available from these buttons — there is no keyboard shortcut.
If saving is unavailable, check the title, destination blog, author, and publication status. See Article cannot be saved or displayed for more help.
What becomes available after saving
Once an article has been saved, more buttons appear at the top of the editor:
- Preview — choose a theme and open the article in the theme editor
- View analytics — open the analytics screen for this article
- Rewrite — ask AI for an improved version (Pro plan only)
These buttons are hidden while you are writing a new, unsaved article.
