What you will learn
On this pageContentsCloseOpen
Salons, studios, classes, repair intake, consultations. The moment you're selling time instead of objects, you go looking for booking settings in the Shopify admin and find nothing.
That's not a navigation problem. Shopify's help center page on selling services and digital products says it directly:
To provide a link for your customers to book your service, install an app from the Shopify App Store.
Shopify treats booking as app territory. No native path is offered.
The usual next thought is: could the free Shopify Forms app work as a booking form? The short answer is that it isn't a feature gap — it's structural. Below: why Forms can't become a booking form, verified against Shopify's own documentation, followed by six real booking apps compared on the same axes. Research date: September 1, 2026. All prices are USD as listed on the Shopify App Store.
The short version
If you only need to agree on a date, with no payment and no availability tracking, a Shopify Forms contact form with a date field works. You just can't collect a time — more on that below.
If you need customers to pick a time slot, prevent double bookings, or pay at the point of booking, an app becomes mandatory at that moment. There's no workaround.
By use case:
- Serious use on a free plan: Appointo (listed as Appointment Booking App ointo). Its free tier includes unlimited services, unlimited bookings, and Shopify POS
- Japanese UI listed: Appointo or Sesami Booking Platform — the only two of six with Japanese in the Languages field
- Lowest monthly cost: Tipo Appointment Booking — $9.90/month for 10 services and 10 team members
- Retail with POS: Appointo, Tipo, Easy Appointment Booking App, or Sesami. The most-reviewed app, Cowlendar, makes no mention of POS
- Multi-location or large scale: Sesami Booking Platform — Premium at $299/month covers multi-location
The single most misleading thing in this category is the phrase "free plan available." Across all six, the practical range of the free tier varies by more than twentyfold.
What native Shopify actually does
You can sell a service; you can't book one
There's no distinct "service" product type. You create a normal product and uncheck "This is a physical product" in the shipping section so no shipping is calculated. The bulk editor can flip this across many products at once.
That gets you a sellable "60-minute consultation, $80." What it doesn't get you is any screen where the customer chooses when they're coming in. Scheduling happens afterward, over email.
Why Shopify Forms isn't a booking form
Shopify Forms is a free first-party app for popup and inline forms. Its documented purposes are marketing subscriber capture, customer segmentation, lead capture, contact forms, and B2B company account requests. Booking isn't among them.
And if you tried to repurpose it, these are the walls:
There is no time field type. The eight custom field types are single-line text, dropdown, radio buttons, multi-line text, multiple choice, date, number, and file upload. The date type selects one specific day. Typing "10:00" and "11:00" into a dropdown gets you strings, not slots.
There is no conditional logic. You can't say "if they pick Service A, only show the 90-minute slots."
Multi-step forms aren't supported. Service selection, then date, then details, isn't a shape you can build.
There is no availability tracking. This is the decisive one. Submissions are stored as customer records and metafields, but nothing about a submission consumes a slot, so any number of people can claim the same time. Double bookings are prevented by hand or not at all.
Shopify also publishes hard caps: 25 forms per store, 31 fields per form, and every form requires either an email address or a phone number.
Shopify POS has no booking feature either
Retailers often assume booking lives in POS. The help center's POS table of contents covers inventory, customers, payments, returns and exchanges, staff, discounts, receipts, analytics, and offline use — nothing about appointments. The developer documentation for POS extensions contains no references to booking, appointments, or calendars.
Meanwhile, the App Store exposes an "Appointment booking" capability filter for POS. POS booking is designed to arrive through apps.
When you need an app
As a delta from native, any one of these means installing something:
- Customers choose a time slot
- The same slot can't be booked twice
- Payment or a deposit is captured at booking
- Availability is tracked per staff member or resource
- Reminders go out automatically the day before
- Bookings sync to Google Calendar or Outlook
- In-store POS sees the same booking data
If none apply — a handful of bookings a month, handled by phone — the monthly fee is dead weight.
Six booking apps compared
Booking apps live in the App Store's Event booking category, which lists 127 apps as of September 1, 2026. That category also mixes in delivery-date pickers and event ticketing, so here are six with real appointment-booking track records. Ratings and review counts are as shown on the category listing page.
| App | Developer | Rating (reviews) | Built for Shopify | What the free plan really covers | Metered on | Cheapest paid | Top tier | Japanese UI | POS mentioned |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Appointo (Appointment Booking App ointo) | Sidepanda Services LLP | 4.9 (892) | Yes | Unlimited services and bookings | Features | $14/mo | $39/mo | Yes | Yes |
| Sesami Booking Platform | Sesami Inc. | 4.6 (261) | No | No free plan | Resources | $19/mo | $299/mo | Yes | Yes |
| Tipo Appointment Booking | tipo.io | 4.9 (341) | Yes | 1 service, 1 team member | Services and members | $9.90/mo | $14.90/mo | No | Yes |
| BTA Appointment Booking App | BTA Commerce, Inc. | 4.7 (390) | No | 10 bookings total | Monthly bookings and staff | $25/mo | $110/mo | No | Partly |
| Easy Appointment Booking App | Servicify | 4.9 (523) | Yes | Unlimited bookings, but 1 service only | Features | $15/mo | $39/mo | No | Yes |
| Appointment Booking Cowlendar | Booking Appointment Cowlendar | 4.9 (2,174) | Yes | 5 bookings per month | Booking revenue | $13.99/mo | $59.99/mo | No | No |
Three observations.
"Free plan available" is close to useless as a filter. Appointo's free tier has no cap on services or bookings and includes POS. Cowlendar's stops at five bookings a month; BTA's at ten bookings total. The first can run a small salon indefinitely; the latter two are trial modes. The App Store listing page shows all three identically.
No two of the six meter the same thing. BTA charges on monthly booking count and staff seats. Tipo on services and team members. Sesami on resources. Appointo and Easy gate by feature. And Cowlendar charges on booking revenue — Starter covers up to $1,000, Basic $3,000, Growth $10,000. Sell high-ticket services and you'll need an upper tier at low volume. Lining up the monthly prices side by side tells you very little.
Review counts don't map to your requirements. Cowlendar leads the group with 2,174 reviews and carries the Built for Shopify badge, but neither its Works with list nor its pricing copy mentions Shopify POS. If in-store booking is the point, an app with a tenth of the reviews fits better.
App notes
Appointo (Appointment Booking App ointo)
The widest free tier of the six: no cap on services or bookings, plus Shopify POS, multiple time zones, multi-day bookings, and admin-side rescheduling and cancellation. Paid tiers are Pro at $14/month (Zoom, reminders, Google/Outlook/Apple calendar sync, branding removal), Premium at $25/month (waitlist, group bookings, customer self-reschedule), and Advanced at $39/month (service add-ons, surge pricing, customer portal). The listing notes usage charges for SMS and WhatsApp, plus a 2% charge on subscriptions and bundles.
Sesami Booking Platform
No free plan; entry is Small at $19/month. Pricing is metered on resources: 5 on Small, 20 on Pro ($129/month), 40 on Premium ($299/month). Google Calendar sync, API, SDK, and Shopify POS integration are all included from the lowest tier. Premium is described as suited to Shopify Plus, adds multi-location, and carries a 30-day trial. No Built for Shopify badge.
Tipo Appointment Booking
The free tier is one service and one team member, but POS and Zapier integration are included even there. Basic at $9.90/month raises that to 10 services and 10 members and adds Google Calendar sync, attendee-count discounts, and custom questions. Pro at $14.90/month makes services and members unlimited. The cheapest route to unlimited in this group. Listed languages: English only.
BTA Appointment Booking App
Launched in 2012, the oldest of the six (formerly BookThatApp). Booking caps are explicit: 10 total on free, 50/month with 1 staff seat on LITE ($25/month), 350/month with 10 seats on PREMIUM ($49.95/month), and 1,000/month with 20 seats on BUSINESS ($110/month). Predictable if your volume is predictable, expensive if you run high volume at low ticket prices. Deposits, custom SMTP, and SMS notifications require PREMIUM or above.
Easy Appointment Booking App
The free tier has unlimited bookings and unlimited team members but allows only one service. A single-menu store can run on it indefinitely. Standard at $15/month adds automated reminders and intake questions; Pro at $29/month adds multi-event calendars and Google Calendar and Zoom sync; Pro Plus at $39/month adds waitlists, booking packs and bundles, automated refunds and deposits. The listing notes $8 per staff login and a $99 Ultimate Plan requirement for Klaviyo and Shopify Flow.
Appointment Booking Cowlendar
Most-reviewed of the six at 2,174, with the Built for Shopify badge. The free tier is five bookings per month with full feature access. The three paid tiers — Starter $13.99, Basic $29.99, Growth $59.99 — differ only in the booking revenue ceiling, not in features. Google, Outlook, Zoom, and Teams integrations, group bookings, multi-day bookings, deposits, and prepayment are common to all paid tiers. No Shopify POS reference was found on the listing.
Pre-install checklist
- Decide whether time-slot selection is truly required. If a date alone suffices, Shopify Forms may do.
- Decide whether double bookings must be prevented. If yes, an app is the only option.
- Work out whether your bookings grow with count, services, staff, or revenue — then avoid apps metered on that axis.
- Read what the free tier limits: bookings, services, or revenue. These aren't interchangeable.
- For retail, verify Shopify POS support app by app. Review volume tells you nothing about it.
- Check whether Google Calendar sync sits in the entry tier or the upper tiers.
- Check for charges outside the monthly fee — staff seats, SMS, integration add-ons.
- If you need Japanese, confirm Japanese appears in the Languages field (two of six).
- Confirm how existing booking data can be exported before you'd ever need to leave.
Wrapping up
Three steps.
1. Accept that selling time means installing an app. Shopify's help center points you there itself, and neither Forms nor POS substitutes. Forms in particular can't be worked around, because the type you'd need — a time — doesn't exist.
2. Decide what your bookings scale with before you compare prices. Count, menu size, or ticket value. Skip this and you'll meet an unexpected pricing model right when things start working.
3. Read the free tier, don't trust the label. Appointo's unlimited free tier, Cowlendar's five per month, and BTA's ten total all appear on the App Store as "Free plan available." Start on the most generous one, learn your requirements, then move.
Pricing, features, and language support reflect Shopify App Store listings as of September 1, 2026. Verify current details before installing.
Shopify's admin address validation is on by default, free, on every plan, and supports the US. Checkout-time validation is one toggle away. Shopify's own documentation then warns that running a third-party address validation app at the same time can create conflicting suggestions and reduce checkout conversion — you are meant to pick one. That reframes the whole category: apps are not there to duplicate deliverability checking, they are there to enforce policy Shopify's validator does not enforce, like blocking PO boxes or requiring an apartment number. We priced four real apps from the US App Store on September 2, 2026, spanning $4.99/month flat, $0.04 per order, and one that requires a separate subscription billed outside Shopify.
