What you will learn

The email marketing category of the Shopify App Store holds 383 apps as of August 31, 2026. Every listing shows "free plan available" or "free to install," and opening the pricing pages doesn't produce a comparison.
The reason is specific. The unit each free tier is measured in differs fundamentally. Shopify's own app counts how many emails you send in a month. Klaviyo and Omnisend count how many contacts you hold. Under the first, a 5,000-person list that gets two sends a month stays free. Under the second, you're billable the moment your contact count passes 251 — even if you never send anything. "Free up to 250" and "free up to 10,000" aren't on the same axis at all.
There's also a 2026 change worth catching. The first-party app long known as Shopify Email has been renamed Shopify Messaging and now handles SMS and WhatsApp alongside email. The Help Center states it plainly — "Shopify Messaging, formerly known as Shopify Email" — and the App Store URL redirects. Plenty of comparison articles still haven't caught up.
This article pins down the first-party app's pricing rules and eligibility requirements from the Help Center, then converts the major apps' free tiers to the same conditions and compares totals. Researched August 31, 2026.
The short version
Large list, low send frequency? Shopify Messaging's free tier wins by a wide margin. Counting sends rather than contacts means a 5,000-person list sent once a month uses half the free allowance.
List of 250 or fewer, sending often? Klaviyo's or Omnisend's free plan is viable — but Omnisend also caps at 500 emails per month, so 250 contacts twice a month exhausts it.
At 500 contacts, the gap is stark. Shopify Messaging lets you send 20 campaigns for free. Omnisend Standard ($16/month) allows 6,000 emails a month, about 12 campaigns. Klaviyo's email plan is $20/month for the 251–500 contact band. On pure send cost, the first-party app is not close.
If you need a non-English admin, the field narrows sharply. The App Store pages for both Klaviyo and Omnisend state that the app has not been translated into Japanese. Shopify Messaging supports 21 languages including Japanese.
The reason to pay is not volume — it's design freedom. Segmentation, predictive analytics, unified SMS and push, external integrations. Compare on send cost alone and paid apps stop making sense.
What the first-party app actually covers
Start by pinning the first-party scope down from the Help Center.
Shopify Messaging sends email, SMS and WhatsApp marketing campaigns directly from Shopify admin, and creates email and SMS marketing automations. It's available on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Shopify Plus plans.
App Store rating is 4.7 across 4,251 reviews. It supports 21 languages including Japanese.
The free tier rules
The Help Center pricing page spells out the calculation.
10,000 free emails arrive at the beginning of every month. Charges begin after that. The allowance is shared across every email campaign you send in the calendar month.
Emails are counted per recipient address. One promotional email to 800 subscribers counts as 800 emails.
Overage pricing tiers down. Beyond 10,000, it's $1 USD per 1,000 emails up to 300,000; $0.65 per 1,000 after 300,000; $0.55 per 1,000 after 750,000. You aren't billed until the cost reaches $0.005.
Automations consume the allowance, with one exception. Marketing automations count toward your 10,000 free emails — but abandoned checkout automations are always free and don't count toward the monthly limit. If abandoned checkout recovery is your main play, that exception matters.
Nothing carries over. Unused emails don't roll into the following month.
The Help Center's own example: two October campaigns to 6,000 subscribers each is 12,000 emails — 10,000 free, 2,000 chargeable at $1 per 1,000, total $2.
Eligibility requirements
Several conditions are easy to miss.
Your store must be on an active, paid Shopify plan; must have the Online Store sales channel installed; must have a payment provider set up; and must comply with Shopify's Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy.
Also: on a Pause and Build plan or during a free trial, you can create campaigns and send test messages to yourself, but you can't send to your subscribers. Plan to complete send testing during your trial and you'll stop here.
The feature also requires Shopify Network Intelligence to be enabled in your privacy settings.
The major apps on one table

| App | Free tier unit | What the free tier gives you | First paid tier | Localized admin | Rating (reviews) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Messaging | Emails sent | 10,000/month (abandoned checkout free and separate) | $1 per 1,000 over the allowance | 21 languages | 4.7 (4,251) |
| Klaviyo: Email Marketing & SMS | Contacts | Email free forever up to 250 contacts, 150 SMS/MMS credits | Email $20/month (251–500 contacts) | Not translated into Japanese | 4.7 (3,024) |
| Omnisend Email Marketing & SMS | Contacts plus sends | Up to 250 contacts, 500 emails/month, 500 web push/month | Standard $16/month (500 contacts, 6,000 emails/month) | Not translated into Japanese | 4.8 (2,962) |
| Mailchimp Email SMS Marketing | Not verified | Free plan available (details unverified) | Not verified | Not verified | 4.8 (1,370) |
| Seguno Email Marketing | Not verified | Free to install | Not verified | Not verified | 4.8 (652) |
Three things fall out.
First, mismatched units make direct comparison impossible. "Free up to 250 contacts" and "free up to 10,000 sends" swap places depending on list size and send frequency. To decide, multiply your subscriber count by your monthly campaign count and test the result against both units.
Second, at 500 contacts the difference is concrete. 500 subscribers × 20 campaigns = 10,000 emails, exactly inside Shopify Messaging's free allowance. The same 500 on Omnisend Standard is $16/month with a 6,000-email ceiling — about 12 campaigns. Klaviyo's email plan runs $20/month in the 251–500 band. Per unit of send volume, the first-party app is clearly cheaper.
Third, the invoices arrive from different places. Both Klaviyo's and Omnisend's App Store pages note that billing may come from the vendor separately from your Shopify invoice. Shopify Messaging overage is added to your Shopify bill for the previous month as "Marketing emails." Once you factor in accounting overhead, that's a difference too.
Where each app sits
Shopify Messaging (formerly Shopify Email)
4.7 across 4,251 reviews, split 3,420 five-star against 112 one-star — among the more stable first-party apps.
Its strengths are the pricing structure above and 21-language support. Listed integrations are Shopify Flow, Shopify admin and Shopify Forms, so acquisition through forms and delivery can both stay first-party.
The caveat: since pricing is driven by send volume, a store with both a large list and a high cadence burns the allowance fast. But at $1 per 1,000 over, sending 50,000 emails in a month means 40,000 chargeable — $40. At that price point it still sits at the cheap end of the category.
Klaviyo: Email Marketing & SMS
4.7 across 3,024 reviews — but split 2,683 five-star against 206 one-star, a higher one-star share than Omnisend.
Free to install, with email free forever up to 250 contacts and 150 SMS/MMS credits included. Paid starts at $15/month for SMS (up to 1,250 credits, carrier fees included) and $20/month for email (251–500 contacts).
The paid feature list covers multi-channel segmentation and flows, personalized product recommendations, deliverability reputation-repair AI, send time optimization, predictive analytics, multi-channel A/B testing and 160+ campaign templates. If predictive analytics and segment design are the core of your programme, that's the reason to pay.
The constraint is localization. The listing states the app has not been translated into Japanese, and Japanese isn't among its supported languages.
Omnisend Email Marketing & SMS
4.8 across 2,962 reviews, split 2,663 five-star against 132 one-star — a lower one-star share than Klaviyo.
The free plan covers up to 250 contacts (list size itself unlimited), 500 emails and 500 web push notifications per month. It also includes 250+ email templates, popups and signup forms, prebuilt workflows, built-in AI, and 24/7 live support even on the free plan.
Standard is $16/month with up to 500 contacts and 6,000 emails per month, rising as the list grows; it's also where Omnisend branding disappears. Pro is $59/month with up to 2,500 contacts, unlimited emails, advanced reporting, product recommendation AI, and SMS available from $0.007 per message.
Live support on the free plan is a clear differentiator. But the supported language is English only, and the listing likewise states it hasn't been translated into Japanese.
If you need a localized admin
Requiring a Japanese admin narrows the field considerably. Klaviyo and Omnisend are both untranslated; Shopify Messaging supports Japanese.
Domestic Japanese CRM/MA tools exist as well. One, "Action Link" (メール LINE SMS配信 CRM/MA), is Japanese-language, handles email, LINE and SMS, and lists pricing at ¥10,000/month for up to 5,000 unique customers and 20,000 messages per month, then usage-based by stored customer count and monthly send volume, with an unlimited-send option from ¥30,000/month at 5,000 unique customers. It launched June 5, 2026 and had zero reviews as of August 31, 2026, so there's no operational track record to check — verify in a test environment before production.
If LINE is your primary channel, email app comparisons won't settle the decision. Evaluate the LINE Official Account pricing model separately.
Choosing by situation
Several thousand subscribers, one or two newsletters a month. Shopify Messaging. 3,000 subscribers twice a month is 6,000 emails — inside the free allowance.
Around 200 subscribers, segmented finely, sent often. Klaviyo's or Omnisend's free plan. Note Omnisend's 500-email monthly cap: 200 subscribers twice a month is 400 emails, and the third send goes over. Klaviyo's free tier states no send cap, only the 250-contact threshold.
Localized admin is mandatory. Shopify Messaging is the practical starting point. Reach for a domestic tool only after establishing what the first-party app can't do.
Abandoned checkout recovery is the core play. Shopify Messaging. Abandoned checkout automations are always free and don't count toward the 10,000 monthly limit. That alone justifies trying it.
Building on predictive analytics and advanced segmentation. Klaviyo's email plan or above. Predictive analytics, send time optimization and reputation-repair AI don't appear on the first-party pricing page. The question is whether you can staff an English-interface workflow.
Consolidating channels beyond email. Shopify Messaging covers SMS and WhatsApp; Omnisend covers web push and SMS; Klaviyo covers SMS and push. SMS is separately metered in every case, so don't decide on the email allowance alone.
Pre-install checklist
- Have you multiplied subscriber count by monthly campaign count to get your required send volume?
- Have you tested that number against both free-tier units — sends and contacts?
- Have you separated abandoned checkout volume from the calculation? (It's outside the first-party allowance.)
- Are you on a Pause and Build plan or a free trial? (You can't send to subscribers via the first-party app.)
- Is Shopify Network Intelligence enabled in your privacy settings?
- Are the Online Store sales channel and a payment provider both set up?
- Does the admin meet your language requirement? (Klaviyo and Omnisend are untranslated into Japanese.)
- Will billing land on your Shopify invoice or arrive separately from the vendor?
- If you'll use SMS or WhatsApp, have you checked their additional requirements and charges?
- If migrating an existing list, does marketing consent status carry across?
Wrapping up
Work through it in order.
Identify whether each free tier is measured in sends or contacts. The two aren't interchangeable, and putting them in one table without that distinction produces nothing. Multiply your subscriber count by your monthly campaign count and test the result against both units, counting abandoned checkout volume separately since it sits outside the first-party allowance. Then filter on admin language — which removes Klaviyo and Omnisend if you need Japanese. Finally, ask whether the non-volume reasons — segment design, predictive analytics, integrations, support — justify the monthly fee.
On volume alone, Shopify Messaging's 10,000 free emails a month is hard to beat. Choose a paid app based on how far you can shape the sending, not how much you can send. Run the first-party app for a few months, write down specifically what's missing, and only then evaluate a move.
Shopify sorts every discount into product, order, or shipping classes, and only six combinations exist. Two are limited to eligible merchants — eligibility means no checkout.liquid customizations and not running one specific named app. One is Plus-only. Add the hard caps: 25 active automatic discounts, 5 product/order codes plus 1 shipping code per order. Plus how two leading discount apps meter on completely different units.
