Shopify Has No Built-In Product Reviews. Here Is What Five Real Review Apps Actually Give You

Product reviews are not a native Shopify feature. Here is what the standard product review metaobject replaced it with, and how five real review apps compare on free-plan ceilings, language coverage, and where your review data actually lives. Researched August 31, 2026.

"I want star ratings on my product pages." Start shopping for an app with that requirement and the first wall you hit is volume: the Shopify App Store's product reviews category lists 426 apps as of August 31, 2026.

The second wall is that every comparison article says the same thing. Judge.me is free and full-featured. Loox is strong on photo reviews. Read five of them and you still have no tiebreaker.

The reason is that the comparisons are measuring the wrong things. Reviews are the category with the highest switching cost of anything you install. Years of accumulated reviews are a store asset, and whether you can take them with you matters more than a $30/month price gap. Most comparisons only look at features and price.

This article starts with what Shopify itself does and does not do with reviews, then compares five real apps on three axes: what the free plan actually caps, what "supports your language" really covers, and where the review data is stored. Researched August 31, 2026.

The short version

There are four outcomes here.

Reviews are not available as a native Shopify feature, so installing an app is unavoidable. Unlike blogging or SEO, there is almost no "how far does the native feature get me" question to answer first.

If cost matters most and you don't want a review-count ceiling, Judge.me Product Reviews App. Its free plan carries unlimited reviews and unlimited review requests.

If the presentation of photo and video reviews is what moves your conversion rate, Loox ‑ Product Reviews App. Note that its paid pricing scales with order volume.

If you want to spend nothing at all, AG Product Reviews App & UGC. It has no paid tier — the App Store price field reads "Free" and nothing else.

Shopify does not ship a product review feature

Start here, because it changes the whole framing. The Online Store section of the Shopify Help Center covers pages, themes, menus, blogs and storefront search. There is no product reviews entry. Look through the admin settings and you will not find a way to collect or display reviews either.

Shopify used to publish a free first-party app called Product Reviews. It is no longer listed in the Shopify App Store. Several agencies and review-app vendors report the removal date as May 6, 2024. Either way, there is no path to installing it today. Merchants who don't know this history still go looking for "the official Shopify reviews app," fail to find it, and assume they're missing something.

So reviews are not a native capability you extend with an app — they are a capability an app supplies outright. The clean line you can draw with SEO apps versus Shopify's native SEO doesn't exist here.

What replaced it: the standard product review metaobject

Shopify did not walk away from reviews entirely. Instead of maintaining an app, it standardized the storage format for review data.

According to shopify.dev, Shopify maintains a standard metaobject definition named Product Review (type: product_review). Each individual review is stored as a metaobject entry with fields for rating, title, body, submitted-at, author, order, product, media URLs, language and app verification status. Per-product aggregates — average rating and review count — are written to the reviews.rating and reviews.rating_count metafields.

The critical detail is that this definition is restricted to approved partner apps. Shopify runs a "standard product review syndication program" with an approval process. Apps that join must syndicate all valid reviews into the standard format and keep the aggregate counts current. Participating apps are required to display a "Verified by Shop" badge on their review surfaces, and syndicated reviews become eligible for display in the Shop app.

What that means from the merchant's chair is straightforward: with a participating app, your reviews live not only on the vendor's servers but as custom data on your own store. That is a materially different position from reviews that exist solely inside a vendor database.

One caveat: reviews.rating and reviews.rating_count are not visible in the Shopify admin. They are accessible only through the GraphQL Admin API, by design, because merchants aren't meant to edit them. "I can't see it in admin" does not mean "it isn't there."

The five apps, and the axes that matter

These five were selected from the product reviews category to span different review volumes and different design intents. All five were confirmed listed in the Shopify App Store on August 31, 2026.

What the table actually tells you

First, "has a free plan" is not one thing. The same three words cover unlimited reviews and requests (Judge.me), a 500-order lifetime allowance (Loox), 50 orders per month (Yotpo), and six reviews per product (TrustWILL Reviews). Whether you can realistically run on a free plan depends on your order volume and catalogue size, and the answer swings by an order of magnitude across these five.

Second, listed languages and human support are separate facts. The App Store shows a language list on one part of the listing and a support note on another. Loox, Yotpo and TrustWILL Reviews all carry a note stating the developer does not offer direct support in Japanese, and TrustWILL Reviews carries that note despite marketing itself to the Japanese market. If you operate in a non-English market, check both fields — a translated admin UI is not the same as someone who can answer your ticket.

Third, Yotpo flags external billing. Its pricing section states that Yotpo may bill you separately from your Shopify invoice. Your Shopify bill will not show the full cost. For how app charges work generally, see why Shopify app costs don't match the quoted price.

Fourth, all five carry the review syndication feature tag. That tag is App Store taxonomy, not confirmation of approval into the standard syndication program. If portability is a priority, verify the actual sync scope in each vendor's documentation.

App by app

Judge.me Product Reviews App

Best for: stores that don't want a review-count ceiling and want to keep costs down.

The Forever Free plan carries unlimited reviews, unlimited review requests, unlimited photo and video reviews, review widgets and star badges, SEO rich snippets, and Shop app review syndication. Free video reviews are unique among these five.

The paid Awesome plan is $15/month and adds 100+ integrations (Klaviyo, Gorgias and others), full widget and email customization, Google Shopping review feeds, an SEO review page and AI replies. A 15-day free trial is available.

It imports reviews from Amazon, Etsy, Yotpo and Loox, which makes it a common destination for merchants migrating off another app. It carries Built for Shopify.

Watch for: a July 2026 review from a Japanese merchant notes that the menus are largely in English despite Japanese being a listed language. If you're relying on a localized admin, check the demo store first.

Loox ‑ Product Reviews App

Best for: stores where visual social proof is the conversion lever.

The free Beginner plan includes review request emails and reminders, discounts for photo reviews, 17+ widgets, Google rich snippets and Shop app sync, with a ceiling of 500 orders.

Convert is $49.99/month, which includes 300 orders, with each additional 300 orders adding $50. AI sorting, summaries, translation and replies, video reviews, and API and webhook access start here. Unlimited is $299.99/month. A 14-day free trial is available.

Watch for: the order-based pricing means your cost climbs with your growth in steps that are easy to underestimate. The App Store lists English as the only language and states plainly that the app is not translated into Japanese; the developer does not offer direct Japanese support.

Yotpo: Product Reviews App

Best for: merchants adopting Yotpo as a broader marketing stack rather than reviews alone.

The free plan covers up to 50 orders per month with automated review requests, an email template library, sentiment and profanity screening, and on-site display. Starter is $15/month and Pro is $119/month, both varying with order volume. Google Seller Ratings and AI review summaries start at Pro.

Watch for: three things. Its listing flags billing outside the Shopify invoice. It is the only one of these five without Built for Shopify. And a July 2026 review objects to the pricing structure, saying a small business doesn't need 1,000 reviews a month but has nothing cheaper than $129 — a figure that doesn't match the currently listed $119 Pro plan, so the reviewer may have been looking at a different tier. Support latency complaints appear in the same period. A single review is not a verdict, but with volume-based pricing it's worth modelling your own order count before committing.

TrustWILL Reviews

Best for: low-cost entry with a localized admin, particularly for merchants selling into Japan.

Published by CWILL (formerly Channelwill's Trustoo), it leads with a Japanese admin UI, Japanese widgets and automatic comment translation. The free plan describes unlimited product and store reviews while simultaneously listing a cap of six reviews per product — read that limit carefully before assuming "unlimited." Starter is $11.99/month ($115.10/year, 20% off) and Growth is $29.99/month ($287.90/year). Video review collection begins at Growth. A 7-day free trial is available.

Watch for: despite the market positioning, the developer info panel states that direct Japanese support is not offered, and the listed address is in Cary, North Carolina. A June 2026 review from a Japanese merchant reports that images could not be uploaded from iOS through the review widget inside Customer Accounts; the developer replied that it was being worked on. If photo reviews are central to your plan, test the submission flow on real devices during the trial.

AG Product Reviews App & UGC

Best for: validating whether reviews move your numbers at all, without spending anything.

The App Store price field reads "Free" with no paid tier listed. It covers automated review collection, discount-driven review prompts, popup, carousel and testimonial widgets, and Google rich snippets. It carries Built for Shopify.

Watch for: video reviews do not appear in its listed display options — the feature set centres on photo reviews and star ratings. Its integration list (Foxify, Joy Loyalty, Klaviyo, PageFly, Push Owl) is narrower than Judge.me's or Loox's. And with no paid tier today, factor in that the pricing model could change.

Picking by situation

Review volume is unpredictable or high. Judge.me Product Reviews App — no free-plan review ceiling means no sudden cost cliff as you grow.

Photo and video reviews drive the purchase decision. Loox ‑ Product Reviews App, if order-based pricing works for you. If you want video reviews at no cost, Judge.me is the alternative.

You need a localized admin. Judge.me, TrustWILL Reviews and AG Product Reviews all list non-English languages. With a small catalogue, TrustWILL Reviews' free plan works; with a large one, the six-per-product cap rules it out.

Budget is zero. AG Product Reviews App & UGC, provided you don't need video reviews.

You already run other Yotpo products. Yotpo: Product Reviews App. For any other reason, model the cost at your order volume first.

Before you install

  • Take your monthly order count and catalogue size, and check them against each free-plan ceiling
  • Decide whether you need video reviews, and confirm which tier includes them
  • Check the listed languages and the developer support note separately
  • If you have existing reviews, confirm the import path and supported formats before switching
  • Confirm in the vendor's documentation whether reviews syndicate to the standard product review metaobject
  • Test the review submission flow on real iOS and Android devices during the free trial
  • Understand how the widget embeds into your theme and what stays behind on uninstall (what Shopify apps leave behind)
  • Measure page speed before and after adding the widget (do Shopify apps slow your store down)

Bottom line

Three criteria decide this.

Free-plan ceilings, mapped to your own numbers. The same phrase covers "unlimited" and "six per product."

Listed languages versus actual support, checked as two separate fields. Marketing a product to a market does not mean supporting that market's language.

Where the review data lives. Reviews syndicated to the standard product review metaobject persist as custom data on your own store — a difference that only shows up years later, at exactly the moment you want to switch.

Narrow to two candidates on those three, then test the full submission flow on real devices inside the trial window. In the category with the highest switching cost, that order of operations is worth the extra week.

All pricing and features above reflect what was displayed in the Shopify App Store on August 31, 2026, and are subject to change. Check the current listings before you commit.

RelatedShopify's Abandoned Checkout Email Never Reaches Anyone Who Only Filled a Cart

Shopify only counts a checkout as abandoned once a shopper enters contact info and stalls for ten minutes. That excludes every cart-only exit, every POS and Shop app checkout, and anything older than three months. Plus the conditions that silently block delivery, the opt-in you cannot undo, and how three recovery apps bill on three different units. Researched August 31, 2026.
