Shopify ships three separate free fraud tools and merchants treat them as one. They aren't. Fraud analysis gives no risk recommendation at all on POS, B2B, subscription renewal, free, or gift-card-paid orders. Shopify Protect covers only Shop Pay orders, only for US-located merchants with a US Shopify Payments account, only for orders that are entirely physical and shipped — and changing a shipping address after checkout voids the coverage. Shopify Marketplace Connect covers four US marketplaces, not six — and Etsy is closed to new sellers
Shopify Marketplace Connect is free to install and connects Amazon, Target Plus, Walmart, and eBay. It does not connect TikTok Shop at all, and new Etsy connections cannot be made — existing Etsy sellers keep working, everyone else is locked out. Target Plus and Walmart are United States only, and Target Plus orders cannot use Amazon or Walmart fulfillment. Shopify also publishes a list of metafield types Marketplace Connect ignores, including Metaobject, Files, Money, and Rich Text, and inventory location cannot be set per variant. Shopify Plus Gives You Nine Extra Stores and Exactly One Chance to Copy Data Into Them
Shopify's Help Center says it in one line: store settings, products, collections, and inventory aren't synced between stores, and points merchants at third-party apps or an ERP. The data import only runs at store creation — after that you manage it manually, and it never included category metafields. Meanwhile the App Store's own Multi-store filter in the Inventory sync category returns all 521 apps, unchanged. Shopify Cannot Split a Payout — and That Is the Real Cost of a Multi-Vendor Marketplace
Shopify's Vendor field is a text label next to Tags. Staff seats stop at 0 on Basic, 5 on Grow, and 15 on Advanced. And Shopify Payments has no split-payout construct at all — so every multi-vendor marketplace app you can install is a ledger, not a payment rail. We priced five real marketplace apps from the US App Store on September 2, 2026 and found their monthly fees meter on four different units, which inverts the cheapest-app ranking between a 25-vendor store and a 100-vendor one. The bigger number is the one none of them charge you: Puppet Vendors' own help center documents that PayPal Payouts costs $0.25 per US payout and requires an approval that PayPal can deny outright, and that money from Shopify Payments never reaches your Stripe Connect balance because Shopify runs a managed Stripe account.
Print-on-Demand Apps for Shopify: The Five Cost Variables That Decide Your Margin
Shopify has no native print-on-demand, so every POD app is a separate supplier with its own cost stack. Researched September 2, 2026 on the English Shopify App Store: the same Bella+Canvas 3001, US-fulfilled and sold at $28, lands at $15.73 through Printify's free plan, $16.00 through Printful's, $16.46 on CustomCat Lite and $13.66 on CustomCat Pro — a 10-point margin swing on one identical shirt. CustomCat Pro at $30/month pays for itself at 11 shirts a month; Printify Premium at $39/month needs $118.18 of monthly product spend before its "up to 33%" discount breaks even. Gooten publishes no base costs at all without an account. Includes verbatim reprint and returns policies, US facility counts, and the sales-tax line most margin spreadsheets omit.
