Shopify Campaign Autopilot Is Free — But Two Help Center Pages Disagree on Whether It Needs Your Approval

Campaign Autopilot generates and runs marketing tactics from your store data, at no fee. But it requires Shopify Payments, excludes the Agentic plan, and each of its four channels carries separate eligibility. Shop Campaigns alone is limited to 24 countries and five currencies. And the requirements page says every tactic needs your approval, while the setup page says you can let Autopilot create campaigns on its own — a contradiction worth resolving before you connect an ad account. Plus: pausing Autopilot cancels scheduled email automations. Researched September 1, 2026.

What you will learn

On this pageContentsCloseOpen

A Growth section appeared in the Shopify admin, and inside it, Autopilot. Campaign Autopilot analyzes your products, customers, and sales data, proposes marketing tactics, and runs the ones you approve on connected channels.

Most coverage stops at "Shopify does your marketing for you." Read the requirements page and the picture gets specific: Shopify Payments is mandatory, one plan is excluded outright, and the four connectable channels each carry their own eligibility gate. One of them is limited to 24 countries.

There is also a contradiction in the documentation about whether Autopilot needs your approval to spend. Below: every requirement, how billing splits three ways, what each channel actually needs, and what breaks when you pause. Research date: September 1, 2026.

The short version

Autopilot itself is free. The Help Center states it plainly: "Autopilot is free to use and doesn't have any fees." You pay for the marketing you approve, not for the tool.

Shopify Payments is mandatory. No plan upgrade substitutes for it. Stores on a third-party gateway are excluded entirely.

Every plan qualifies except Agentic. Basic through Plus are all in scope.

Shop Campaigns is limited to 24 countries and five currencies. Your Shopify Payments account must accept AUD, CAD, EUR, GBP, or USD. Stores outside that set can connect the other three channels but not this one.

Two Help Center pages disagree on approvals. The requirements page says every tactic needs approval in Pending actions. The setup page says you can choose whether Autopilot creates email and ad campaigns on its own. Check the permissions screen yourself and set it explicitly.

What Autopilot does — and explicitly doesn't

Autopilot lives at Growth > Autopilot. It uses your store's product, customer, and sales data to recommend concrete actions on connected marketing channels: email automations, ad campaigns, customer acquisition offers.

What's more useful is the list of things the Help Center says it will not do:

  • It runs only tactics you approve. It doesn't modify existing manual campaigns, one-off emails built outside Autopilot, or channel configurations you manage yourself.
  • It doesn't change product prices, descriptions, or store settings. It recommends tactics using data already in Shopify.
  • It can't spend beyond the guardrails you configure, and each paid tactic needs approval before running.

So this is not an AI that rewrites your catalog. It's automation of proposal and execution, with your data as the input and your approval — probably — as the gate.

Every requirement

RequirementDetail
AvailabilityEarly access; certain merchants only
PlanAll subscription plans except the Agentic plan
PaymentsShopify Payments must be activated
ProductsAt least one product
Store statusNot in private mode (no password protection)
ShippingShipping must be set up
PoliciesRefund and shipping policies required
Account standingMust meet Shopify's account standing requirements
StaffMarketing staff permission required

Eligibility is re-checked periodically. If your store falls out of compliance, Autopilot stops running tactics. Temporarily removing a policy page or enabling password protection is enough to trigger that.

The plan requirement is unusually permissive — "all plans other than Agentic" means Basic-tier stores qualify. The Shopify Payments requirement is the real filter.

The four channels

ChannelWhat it runsAlso requiredWho bills the spend
Shopify MessagingEmail automations and one-time campaignsInstall the Shopify Messaging appShopify (per your Messaging plan)
Shop CampaignsAcquisition on the Shop app and websiteMeet Shop Campaigns eligibilityShopify (per Shop Campaigns pricing)
Meta AdsAdvantage+ campaigns on Facebook and InstagramMeta Business Manager; billing and permissions in Meta AdsMeta bills directly
Microsoft AdvertisingPerformance Max on the Microsoft Advertising networkMicrosoft Advertising account; billing and verificationMicrosoft bills directly

Billing splits three ways. The Help Center is explicit that Meta and Microsoft ad spend is billed directly by those platforms and not added to your Shopify subscription invoice. Shopify Messaging and Shop Campaigns charges do run through Shopify. One dashboard, three invoices.

Meta Ads has a structural quirk worth planning around. Autopilot-managed Meta campaigns are separate from campaigns you run yourself, and they use a separate product catalog. The Help Center states they don't replace or merge with what you manage through the Facebook & Instagram by Meta channel. If you already run Meta ads, you end up maintaining two catalogs.

Microsoft Advertising is described as available "to stores in regions where Microsoft Advertising operates, with no additional plan or product category restrictions." Connecting it requires acknowledging in Microsoft Advertising that your ads aren't political advertising.

Shop Campaigns: 24 countries, five currencies

Shop Campaigns is a pay-per-acquisition program running on the Shop app, Shop website, Shopify Product Network, and optional third-party placements. It's the most restricted of the four channels.

Eligible business addresses: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Additional requirements:

  • Shopify Payments set up and accepting AUD, CAD, EUR, GBP, or USD
  • At least one market including a supported country
  • International sales tools configured if targeting customers outside your primary market
  • "Sell directly on Shop with direct checkout" activated in the Shop channel
  • Shopify Network Intelligence activated
  • A valid payment method for Shopify billing
  • Store not in private mode

The Help Center notes Shop Campaigns is expanding to more countries where Shopify Payments is supported; a banner appears on the Shop channel's Advertising page as new countries open, and you can pre-select countries marked Coming soon so campaigns target them automatically once support lands.

Compliance is evaluated continuously. If your store becomes non-compliant you can't create new campaigns and active ones are paused. The listed practices for staying compliant include verifying your account email, enabling two-step authentication, setting up a passkey, paying Shopify bills on time, and keeping your chargeback rate low by fulfilling promptly — the same chargeback rate that affects Shop app feature eligibility generally.

Guardrails, permissions, and the contradiction

Control comes from three settings: monthly budget, guardrails, and permissions.

Monthly budget is the maximum Autopilot can spend across all connected paid advertising channels in a month — a single global cap, not per channel.

Guardrails cover target return on ad spend, target regions, and target languages for ads.

Permissions is where the documentation conflicts. The setup page instructs:

Choose whether Autopilot can create email campaigns and ad campaigns on its own, or needs your approval first.

The requirements page states:

Every tactic requires your approval in Pending actions in Growth > Autopilot before Autopilot runs it on a connected channel.

These describe different behaviors. One offers unattended execution as a setting; the other says approval is unconditional. The Help Center alone can't tell you which reflects the current implementation.

Practical guidance: open the permissions screen, see which options actually appear, and explicitly select the approval-required setting before connecting an ad account. The considerations page does separately state that Autopilot cannot exceed your guardrails and that "each paid tactic still needs your approval before it runs" — so paid spend appears to be gated regardless. Email is the ambiguous case.

What pausing actually does

Pause from the Autopilot configuration card: More actions > Pause all channels. Per the Help Center:

  • All running tactics stop immediately
  • Active ad campaigns are paused
  • Scheduled email automations are canceled
  • Connected channels, guardrails, and permissions settings are retained

Paused campaigns can be resumed manually from the ad platform side if needed — meaning your campaigns still exist in the ad account after you pause Autopilot, and resuming is a two-system operation.

The email line is the one to plan around. Pause for a week and the abandoned-checkout and welcome-series sends scheduled in that window don't go out. A "temporary" pause leaves a hole in your lifecycle messaging.

What data Autopilot reads

Four categories, per the Help Center:

  • Active product catalog: titles, descriptions, images, prices, inventory status
  • Customer segments, purchase history, email subscriber lists
  • Order history, revenue data, conversion metrics
  • Existing campaigns and automations across connected channels

Data sent to Meta for ads is subject to Meta's terms once you connect that channel; the same applies to Microsoft Advertising. Autopilot is a Shopify feature, but connecting an ad channel adds a processor for customer-adjacent data. Reconcile that with your privacy policy before connecting.

The email channel: Shopify Messaging

To use Autopilot's email tactics you need the Shopify Messaging app installed.

As of September 1, 2026, its Shopify App Store rating is 4.8 from 4,250 reviews — 3,420 five-star, 112 one-star. Published by Shopify. It handles email, SMS, and WhatsApp campaigns, and its listed campaign management features include AI generation, triggers and rules, automations, and segmentation. Integrations: Shopify Flow, Shopify admin, Shopify Forms.

Pricing is free to install, with 10,000 emails per month free, then from $1 USD per 1,000 emails per month.

Because Autopilot is free but you pay for what it runs, your email cost is entirely this metered charge. Whether you clear the 10,000/month free allowance is the actual cost question.

Pre-launch checklist

  • Confirm Shopify Payments is activated — nothing else matters without it
  • Confirm your plan isn't the Agentic plan
  • Confirm refund and shipping policies are published
  • Confirm the store isn't password protected
  • Grant Marketing permission to the staff account that will operate it
  • Check each channel's eligibility separately against your address and currency
  • Open the permissions screen and explicitly choose the approval-required setting
  • Decide your monthly budget and guardrails (target ROAS, regions, languages) before connecting
  • If you already run Meta ads, plan for a second, separate product catalog
  • Set up accounting for spend arriving from three sources: Shopify, Meta, Microsoft
  • Write the "pausing cancels scheduled emails" behavior into your runbook

The takeaway

Campaign Autopilot isn't Shopify running your marketing. It's Shopify proposing tactics from data it already holds and executing the ones you clear, across channels you connect and pay for separately.

Four steps:

  1. Verify Shopify Payments first — it's the hard gate
  2. Narrow the four channels by your business address and settlement currency
  3. Set permissions explicitly, given the documented contradiction about approvals
  4. Set budget and guardrails, then connect one channel at a time and observe

This is an early access feature, so the specification is likely to move. Everything here is from the Shopify Help Center as of September 1, 2026 — verify against your admin and the current documentation before you connect anything that spends money.
