Shopify Email Is Now Shopify Messaging — and It Bills a Completely Different Unit Than Klaviyo or Omnisend

Shopify's first-party app charges per email sent. Klaviyo and Omnisend charge per contact on your list. That single difference decides which is cheaper, and it's why comparison articles can never quote you a number. Here are the exact published rates, the free 10,000-email allowance and what it excludes, and where the first-party automations stop. Researched August 31, 2026.

Try to compare Shopify email tools and the pricing tables refuse to line up. The first-party app says "10,000 free emails a month." Klaviyo says "free up to 250 contacts." Omnisend says "250 contacts, 500 emails a month." Emails and contacts, mixed together — no amount of squinting turns that into a ranking.

That's not sloppy marketing copy. The apps bill different units. Shopify's first-party app charges for emails sent. Klaviyo and Omnisend charge for contacts stored. Send the identical campaign from a large list and a small one and the cheaper option inverts.

One more thing worth knowing as of August 31, 2026: Shopify Email is now Shopify Messaging. It isn't an email app anymore — SMS and WhatsApp run through the same admin. Most articles you'll find searching "Shopify Email" predate that change.

Below: the exact first-party billing rules from the Shopify Help Center, why third-party pricing can't be tabulated alongside it, and where the first-party automations stop. Researched August 31, 2026.

The short version

Large list, infrequent sends. Shopify Messaging wins structurally. Contact count is free — you're billed only on what you send.

Small list, frequent sends. A third-party free tier or entry plan may cost less. Klaviyo and Omnisend are both free to 250 contacts.

Heavy segmentation and flow design. Third-party apps. But understand the reason: it's not that higher price buys more features, it's that their pricing is indexed to customer-data volume. Reading it that way keeps your cost projections honest.

Abandoned cart recovery is the whole goal. The first-party app covers it — and abandoned checkout automations don't even count against the 10,000 free emails.

Shopify Email became Shopify Messaging

The Help Center page now reads "Multi-channel marketing with Shopify Messaging" and opens with "Shopify Messaging, formerly known as Shopify Email." The App Store listing moved to shopify-messaging.

Three channels: email, SMS, and WhatsApp. Build campaigns in the admin and send to subscribers on your contact list. Marketing automations are available for email and SMS.

Available on Basic, Grow, Advanced, and Shopify Plus. Pricing is calculated on how many messages you send.

The requirements are worth reading before you plan around it. You need an active paid Shopify plan, the Online Store sales channel installed, a payment provider configured, and compliance with Shopify's Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy. On a Pause and Build plan or a free trial, you can build campaigns and send test messages to yourself, but you cannot send to subscribers.

There's also a note that's easy to miss: the feature requires Shopify Network Intelligence to be enabled in your privacy settings. If your store has that turned off for policy reasons, the app doesn't work.

What the free 10,000 actually covers

This is the part that decides whether the first-party app is enough. From the Help Center pricing page:

10,000 free emails at the start of every month. Every store on a supported plan gets them. Charges begin above that.

Counted per recipient address. One campaign to 800 subscribers is 800 emails.

The allowance is shared across all campaigns in the calendar month. Not per campaign.

Overage is $1 USD per 1,000 emails up to 300,000. Past 300,000 the rate drops to $0.65 per 1,000, and past 750,000 to $0.55 per 1,000. You aren't billed until the cost reaches $0.005.

Marketing automations count toward the 10,000 — except abandoned checkout automations, which are always free and never consume the allowance. That exception matters: the single highest-leverage email in ecommerce runs at effectively zero cost on the first-party app.

You pay only for what you send, and unused emails don't roll over.

The Help Center's own worked example: two campaigns in October to 6,000 subscribers each is 12,000 emails — 10,000 free, 2,000 chargeable at $1 per 1,000, for $2.

Third-party apps meter your list

Klaviyo and Omnisend both show "Free to install" on the App Store. Install costs nothing; the plan does. That's where the similarity ends.

Klaviyo: Email Marketing & SMS (developer Klaviyo, 4.7 across 3,023 reviews). The Free plan is email free forever up to 250 contacts, with SMS free to 150 SMS/MMS credits. Paid plans start at $15/month for SMS (up to 1,250 credits, carrier fees included) and $20/month for Email — and that $20 is explicitly the price for 251 to 500 contacts, with "Upgrade as you grow" attached.

Omnisend Email Marketing & SMS (developer Omnisend, 4.8 across 2,962 reviews). Free covers 250 contacts, 500 emails a month, and 500 web push notifications. Standard starts at $16/month covering up to 500 contacts with a 6,000-email monthly cap. Pro starts at $59/month covering up to 2,500 contacts with unlimited emails, and SMS can be added from $0.007 per message. Both paid tiers carry the note that the price "rises as your list grows."

So on both listings, the published number is the entry price, and what you'd pay at your actual list size isn't on the App Store at all.

Why no comparison article can quote you a number

This is the structural reason writeups in this category go vague at exactly the moment they should get specific.

Shopify Messaging publishes every tier of its send-based rate in the Help Center: free to 10,000, $1 per 1,000 to 300,000, $0.65 to 750,000, $0.55 beyond. Plug in your send volume and anyone reaches the same figure.

Contact-based apps publish one or two entry tiers on the App Store. What 10,000 contacts costs only appears once you select your list size on the vendor's own pricing page. So the article says "Klaviyo starts at $20" — and everything after "starts at" is your actual bill.

The asymmetry is itself a decision input. You control how many emails you send. You don't control how many contacts you accumulate — that grows whether you want it to or not. For cost predictability, that gap is not a small one.

One more detail on both listings: "External charges may be billed by [the developer] separately from your Shopify invoice." If you manage app spend by reading your Shopify bill, these two won't appear there.

Three readings.

Language coverage is thinner than you'd expect. Klaviyo lists English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese (Brazil), Korean, Italian, Polish, Swedish, and Dutch — ten languages, no Japanese. Omnisend lists English only. If your team works in a language outside those lists, treat "can we write the emails" and "can we operate the admin" as two separate questions.

Billing paths differ. First-party overage lands on your Shopify invoice as "Marketing emails," added to the previous month's bill. The third-party apps state they may bill you directly. If you want app spend consolidated onto one invoice, that's a real operational difference.

Abandoned carts are treated differently. The first-party app excludes abandoned checkout automations from the allowance entirely. A third-party abandoned cart flow runs inside whatever your contact-count plan costs. If cart recovery is the only reason you're shopping, the first-party app very likely covers it.

Where the first-party app stops

The Help Center draws the line explicitly: if you want a custom marketing automation, or one that involves a third-party app, you're told to build a workflow in Shopify Flow instead.

That's the boundary. First-party automations run on predefined triggers; assembling arbitrary conditions isn't the design. Branching on browsing behavior, or segmenting on purchase count crossed with product category, is outside it.

Two options from there. Build it in Shopify Flow and call the first-party email, which costs nothing extra but puts design and maintenance on you. Or use an app built for that shape, where cost scales with contact count.

Choosing by situation

Under 10,000 sends a month. Shopify Messaging, at zero cost — and abandoned cart automations don't even count.

Tens of thousands of contacts, one or two sends a month. Shopify Messaging, structurally. 200,000 emails works out to $190: subtract the 10,000 free, and 190,000 at $1 per 1,000. What the same list costs on contact-based pricing, you'll need to look up at your own list size.

Small list, sending near-daily. Under 250 contacts both Klaviyo and Omnisend are free — but Omnisend's free tier also caps at 500 emails a month, so high frequency hits that wall first.

Serious segmentation and flow design. Third-party, or Shopify Flow alongside the first-party app. Plan on the assumption that first-party automations won't let you compose arbitrary conditions.

You need a localized admin outside those language lists. None of these three qualifies. Filter the App Store by supported language and start over.

Before you commit

  • Have you calculated monthly sends per recipient address (sends × subscribers)?
  • Is that number inside or outside the 10,000 free allowance?
  • How much will your list grow over the next year?
  • Does send-based or contact-based billing match how your business scales?
  • Is abandoned cart recovery the primary goal?
  • Do you need custom automations? (If so, Shopify Flow is the prerequisite.)
  • Can you enable Shopify Network Intelligence in privacy settings?
  • Any plan to move to Pause and Build?
  • Will the cost land on your Shopify invoice or come from the developer separately?
  • Can your team write and review the emails in the languages you sell in?

Wrapping up

Comparing features first is why this decision stalls. Reorder it and it resolves.

Start by computing monthly sends per recipient address — sends × subscribers. Without that number, no pricing table means anything.

Then check it against the 10,000 free allowance. Inside, your cost is zero. Outside, the published $1-per-1,000 rate lets you compute the total before you commit to anything.

Next, ask whether you need automation conditions the first-party app can't express. If yes, Shopify Flow or a third-party app. If no, you're done deciding.

If you do go third-party, look up the price at your actual contact count rather than the entry tier, and plan for a bill that arrives separately from Shopify's.

Pricing and features change without notice. Every figure here comes from the Shopify Help Center and Shopify App Store as of August 31, 2026 — verify before you install.

Shopify sorts every discount into product, order, or shipping classes, and only six combinations exist. Two are limited to eligible merchants — eligibility means no checkout.liquid customizations and not running one specific named app. One is Plus-only. Add the hard caps: 25 active automatic discounts, 5 product/order codes plus 1 shipping code per order. Plus how two leading discount apps meter on completely different units.
